Everybody was so kind and generous! Due to some unfortunate travel circumstances, I was late on race morning, but staff and volunteers went above and beyond to make sure I could a) still participate and b) enjoy the race anyway. I mean, they set up the timing mat just for me and sent me on my way with kindness and encouragement. I cannot rave about them enough!!!
The course was beautiful, weather was perfect, aid stations were well staffed and well placed, port-a-potties were also well placed and relatively clean, race fuel was good (love those Honey Stinger gels). Overall an excellent experience. I’m already recommending Vacation Races to everyone I know, but after this one I’m gonna shout it from the rooftops VACATION RACES ARE THE BEST RUNNING EXPERIENCES!!!!

It gets cold at the Grand Canyon!!! I mean, I knew that, but I was unprepared for SNOW in MAY! Weather left the course muddy, which made it much more difficult, and I ended up with a (relatively minor) injury at mile 10 which slowed me down, but without that the course would have run as expected. Beautiful location, great experience!

I love this race, but it doesn’t matter how many times I run it, IT NEVER GETS EASIER! 9 miles uphill is a lot of uphill, and 4 miles of steep downhill after don’t really help. That won’t stop me from running again, because when you finish a race like this you feel amazing!!!

This race is no joke. Running in the sand is way more difficult than I had anticipated, and not just because it slows you down. There is no way to keep it out of your shoes (or hair, or nose…), you sink and slide, passing is impossible along the crest of the dunes, and I definitely saw a few scorpions. By the end of the race I emptied so much sand from my shoes I felt like I had been wandering in the desert for 40 years! I also felt like a freakin’ rock star because this race was AWESOME! And the photos are EPIC

I was coming off a major injury and had just been cleared to run again when I registered for this one. I maybe should have waited another year. The course seemed especially brutal this year and I finished with blood streaming down my heels, and a wicked sunburn. Still, I felt really great about having finished such a difficult race so early into my recovery. Looking forward to running again!
