Got there about 1 hour before race time. We parked down the street less than half a mile from start line at the Franklin Institute. High recommend. Paid $25 and tons of parking available.

Immediately hit the porta-potties that had no line at all. Did my warm-up and then they lined us up. No real space to do strides just within the coral. If you left the corral, it would be difficult to work your way back inside. So, make sure you are warmed up good before entering corral.

The race itself: First 5 miles you are in the city just one big loop because the 7K runners take off same time. As the 7K finishes within the city, HM go straight to the outskirts. Overall good Philly city scenary. Miles 5-9 were mostly flat and down hill with only one slight uphill (less than 150m). During these miles you go down a big hill which was good because in my mind i knew we had to go back up it so paid attention to the tough spots. Mile 10 is the uphill, which by the way is tough but it’s not all that tough its about 200m long and steep. You just need to push through it. I was in about 20th place and a lot of people just gave up. You are rewarded for climbing it because once you do it’s all flat and downhill coming in. Good crowds last 2 miles. Will do again. I liked the course, the crowds and it was rather organized. Good amounts of coffee food trucks and food at the start line as well as beer.

First marathon and I hit my goal time, so my review is biased on the positive side! Starting at the expo it was very unorganized getting there. The directions in all the mailings had people going to Gate 10 just for a man to tell you to make a U-turn and drive down the road to Gate 6. Sounds okay, but when there is 100’s of cars the line gets long just to make a U-turn. The expo itself was organized and had some well-known ‘influencers’ and good deals on running nutrition and gear if you needed that. I only picked up my free stuff and kept it moving because I had my bib mailed to me (highly recommend) and didn’t need gear. If you need these things they had some good deals.

The race: Overall i thought it was well orgainzed with Cops, roads blocked off, TONS of fans cheering almost the whole course, and had about 5 miles in total of good scenic views (bridges, lakes). The parts that people say are the hillest (miles 7-9 and 15-18), yes they are hills but I don’t think you feel them quite as much as anticipated. 15-18 starts on a long bridge that’s a gradual incline and after that you are kind of back in town on rolling hills with Fans cheering. Honestly, all that will take your mind off the elevation. Just when you need flat’s you get them from mile 20 to finish. All flat and major downhill from mile 24!

Post Race: Chaos BUT you don’t care because you are so tired from running just walking and sitting feels great. Getting your beer is at the opposite end of where you finish, same with the Pizza. That should be more catered to runners and closer to the finish line. But overall it’s not worth dinging them for it because they had 5 different beers and tons of food.

Highly recommend this race. The course was about as perfect as could be, so if you just want a good course to PR i think this should be considered. Yes some things outside of running were annoying (bag check, post race, expo) but if you came prepared none of this impacts you.
