Overall, this is a very good event and you can’t go wrong by choosing it. Very well organized and lots of up front communication. The expo was very well done (even though we had a big rain storm during the event in 2024). The swag and medal are good. Course was pretty good, but the finish line area was great.
Richmond has a great history. Took a city tour bus and learned a lot.

It was an easy start to the morning with easy accessibility to check bags and get to the correct start line. Race was smooth with great volunteers and supporters along the way, to finish it off the finish line celebration was organized and fun. I had a lot of fun and PR’d along with cheering on my friend in her first marathon after I finished.

Richmond is my favorite marathon. It is not flat/easy but rolling hills & a lot of down hill at just the right times. The crowd support is amazing and the course a beautiful variety of nature, city, neighborhoods, music, celebrations, and so much support. The morning of we are able to drive and show up early am and park easily, stop in a hotel to use amenities and bag check, pass groups etc are seamless. Once you finish you have so many cheers, smiles etc and the post race party is The best!! I make it a girls weekend with my best running friends and we hang at the post race party for drinks, food, pics, dancing (all free) and then a bus is waiting to bring us back to near where we parked. I have run 10+ marathons and this is my FAVORITE 🤩

I really enjoyed running this race for the first time and as my first half marathon. Everything went incredibly smoothly. Signing up for the race, race pacers, bib pickup, and the actual race were so easy to navigate. The race itself was wonderful, from the spectators to the course, I truly enjoyed the entire experience.

I did the half marathon and this was my first (biggest) race. I am not a runner but this was a fitness bucket list for me and I was supposed to just be one and done. The all around vibes of runners, support, and scenery was an amazing experience and will definitely be doing this race again! Mainly a flat course and with the proper training, I highly recommend anyone up for the challenge. Thank you RVA for making such a memorable race!!🫶🏽

Richmond was my first-ever marathon, and the experience was incredible. The crowd support/hype was incredible, there were beautiful views of the James River and historic Richmond neighborhoods, and the entire raceday was super well-organized. This was definitely a beginner-friendly marathon: a few rolling hills but nothing too crazy, and the crowd / coaches definitely kept us going through those last few miles. Plus you get a “first marathon” sticker to put on your bib, so there were SO many people being extra supportive. Would definitely recommend, and I’m planning to do it next year!

I have run quite a few half marathons over the years but this is my first time at Richmond (Carmax half marathon). Longer version below.
After Covid, I came back to participate in races seriously and my Spring ’24 HM time was 10 minutes slower than my previous PR (set in 2016). Disappointed, I joined a training program and aimed for setting a new PR in the fall. My first goal was the Charlottesville Fall Classic HM in mid October, but nobody else in the program was running it so I didn’t register. Since I followed the October HM training plan, I had to find an October race so I ran the Chessie Trail HM instead. However, improper hydration (mostly during the week before the race than during the race) and the sliding pebbles on the trail caused me to miss my time goal by 3 minutes. After 2 weeks of recovery, I signed up for the Richmond HM, hoping to run faster. This time, I had a good race pacing plan (start slow for the first 2 miles, run at pace for mile 3-8, and speed up if possible for mile 9-13), and I finished the race in 2h09m01s, about 90 seconds faster than my 2016 PR. I would not have broken my previous PR if I ran a different race. Below are my comments for various aspects of the race:
1. With 20k runners, this is a typical large, regional race. (Very similar to the now discontinued Virginia Beach Rock and Roll, which I ran multiple times). Be prepared to arrive at least 1 hour before the start time, and be prepared for 20 minutes minimum waiting time at the potta potties. Even the wave groups are crowded, so try to be at your wave at least 20 minutes in advance or you may not reach it.
On the other hand, it is not easy to get lost before the race, and there are plenty of volunteers pointing the way if you are.
2. Race, first half: the first half of the HM was on rolling hills. Since I train mostly in Charlottesville, hills are not a problem. I lean forward more at uphill, keep the candence high and take shorter strides. Surprisingly, not many runners take the advantage at downhill. I tried to gain some speed always at downhills (on the other hand, that might be the reason I am nursing my knee now, 1 week post race).
3. Half-way hype zone is fantastic: I blasted through it and felt recharged.
4. Race, second half: mostly flat. Since I tried run faster (about 20 sec/mile faster than mile 3-8), I didn’t have much luxury enjoying the scenery. It was hard!
5. Finish line: the last 0.2 mile was completely downhill. I mean completely down hill! My race pace was 9:50/mile for the whole course and I ran the last 0.2 mile at 7:30 / mile. I basically flew through the finish line. (Race picture proved both the flying and the over-striding, see knee problem above).
6. Fuel: typical water, gatorade, some guys were handing out GU at some point, and I recall pickle juice and beer. I didn’t take any of those except a cup of water to dip my sticky fingers in (after consuming my own Honey Stinger gel). Oh I now recall wet and dry towels around mile 9-ish. I didn’t take it, but I would have if I knew in advance!
7. Post race: Got my medal after crossing the finish line. There was an area for picking up blankets and hats (someone was checking at the entrance, since these are for HM and M only, not 8k runners); an area for food; and an area for Information. Luckily I found my husband and a friend at the Info booth. Both I and my husband carried out cellphones, but for some reason we didn’t have signal and so were not sure how to find each other. (In retrospect, my guess is that cell signals were disabled — I find this a GREAT IDEA, absolutely necessary for runners’ safety).
8. Medical: Didn’t need to use it, but there were medical teams and tents along the route.
9. Parking: Now comes my only complaint: The race website says there are many private parking lots available. We found a private parking for an apartment, but the spaces are all *tiny*! I was very nervous about my car mirror hitting the wall or the other car. After the race, we exited the parking garage but Waze for some reason pointed us in the wrong direction on an One-way street. I was very confused because the street looked “off”, but my “running brain” didn’t have enough common sense to correct the mistake. I was in a frantic state until we found a street and turn into the correct direction.
In retrospect, of course we shouldn’t blame the race for our little parking/driving mishap. However, the race website could have pointed out some large, outdoor, safe parking for runners to use. (Coincidentally, at the very first VB RnR that we ran, we were quite lost and couldn’t find our car for about half an hour. I personally didn’t like the race until we found a parking that was safe and easy to find in later years).
10. Next year: I signed up for the HM again for next year. This time, we will find an outdoor parking with plenty of space near the finish line!
TLDR: great race, beware of the crowd (good parking is key), and set a meeting place after the race if you are with friends or family.

Not impressed with expo organization and layout, great volunteers once you got to them. Great crowd throughout race which was amazing! Great water stations and relatively flat course keeping it fast. The downhill finish I really needed for my soul and loved, but it was crushed by people stopping just shy of finish line and the end being so crowded with no one moving; very dangerous! If there was a medical emergency it would have been overlooked.

The Richmond Marathon 2024 lived up to its reputation as one of the most scenic and well-organized races on the East Coast. Held on November 16th, the event drew thousands of runners from across the country to Virginia’s capital city, offering a picturesque route that weaved through charming neighborhoods, historic districts, and along the scenic James River.
The course is one of the event’s strongest selling points. The race starts in downtown Richmond and takes runners through some of the city’s most iconic sights. The route is a beautiful mix of urban and natural landscapes, including tree-lined streets, the iconic James River, and views of the city’s vibrant fall foliage. While Richmond is a relatively flat city, the race does include some rolling hills, particularly in the first few miles, which can challenge runners early on. However, the middle and later parts of the course are much more forgiving, allowing for solid pacing and an opportunity to push through the final stretch. The Richmond Marathon is known for its excellent race-day logistics. The start and finish areas are well-marked and easy to access, with plenty of parking and shuttle options available. Race-day packet pickup was efficient, and the expo offered a good variety of vendors and services, though it could have been a bit more expansive. Aid stations were well-stocked with water, Gatorade, and gels, and the volunteers were friendly and encouraging throughout. The only minor hiccup was a slight delay in the start time due to weather, but the organizers communicated this well, ensuring that everyone was informed. Spectator support in Richmond was exceptional. Volunteers and spectators lined the streets, offering high-fives, cheers, and music to keep runners motivated. The energy in neighborhoods like Carytown and Church Hill was particularly high, providing a much-needed boost during the tougher miles. While not as packed as larger city marathons, the Richmond Marathon still managed to create an enthusiastic and supportive atmosphere without feeling overwhelming. Post-race, Richmond offered all the essential recovery perks: a plentiful selection of food and drink, including pizza, bananas, and water, plus massages and medical support for anyone in need. The finisher’s medal was impressive, with a design that reflected the city’s rich history and scenic landscape. One of the highlights was the post-race festival in Brown’s Island, where participants could relax, stretch their legs, and enjoy live music. The Richmond Marathon is a fantastic event for runners of all levels. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or simply soaking in the beautiful surroundings, this race delivers. With its supportive crowd, scenic course, and impeccable organization, it’s no surprise that Richmond remains one of the most beloved marathons in the region. For anyone considering a fall marathon, the Richmond Marathon should definitely be on your list.

Well organized event. Although it rain all night Thursday and Friday morning, by race day Saturday the weather was perfect (clear skies, low 50sF/10C). Package pick up at Richmond Raceway gives nice photo op if you like that kind of races. It’s a large race with about 8500, just in the half. Race starts right on time. Full and half runners start at the same time, but in opposite sides of the road (full-left, half-right). Be sure you line up in the correct side or you’ll be crossing the wrong timing start mat. Corrals are assigned, but is sort of open gates. (But be honest with yourself. If you’re slower, stay back. You’ll run much more comfortably). This is a mostly urban route with a small section (mile 5-7) inside a nice park. You cross some pretty neighborhoods. Lots of cheering all along the way with some bands and DJs entertaining. It’s all paved, although in some areas is a little (ahem) irregular. (Watch your step) The route is not difficult but it has many “rolling hills” through the entire course until … the big drop. The last half mile is steep downhill and very fast. Have your quads ready for the end !! After race location is excellent, but it was very, very crowded. You get a nice blanket (a real blanket !!) at the end. There was the “mandatory” banana, water, beer and pizza. Great option for a Virginia race for those looking to do the 50 states.

Plenty of parking choices near the start (mostly pay options). Lots of space on Broad St for warming up before the run. There are a few appreciable hills on the course, nothing too crazy and they’re not very long. A significant decrease in elevation during the final mile, so whether you kick or not it’s likely to be your fastest mile. The after party was nice–food & drink options, jumbo projection to watch other finishers, with space to find an area and hang out. Bib color was somehow related to age, but there was still a need to get in a line to confirm age, and then a separate line to get a beer–I found that both frustrating & time consuming (20-30 mins to get a beer at the time I went). The party area was around a 10-15 minute walk from the starting area where we parked, so not too bad. It was fun the entire time & I look forward to making the Richmond half a yearly event for myself.

I found this race through Findmymarathon.com, it’s not so far from Maryland and I can easily drive to there, then the time is November, the temperature would be good for marathon, but it was hot in 2022, I saw more than 10 people lying on the roadside for medical help. Basically, the temperature would be good, 44-55F.
1. 5 for the organization, it is great, the bib pick up is easy.
2. 3 for parking on race day. There are so many public parking garages around the race start, but parking is always a headache everywhere, so I’m not complaining.
3. 3 for the start wave. The start wave is not long enough for the runner who can run into 4 hours, so it was a little crowded, and you can lose 30-60 seconds in the first mile, it’s a huge loss. It would be better to make the start wave longer, at least wave #1-#3.
4. 3 for the water station. It looks like they support as 2/3 water but 1/3 hydration water. hydration water should be the main.
5. 5 for the Richmond people! They are amazing!
6. 5 for the after race place, they have food and drink at the island which is very nice.
I signed up for 2025 immediately on Sunday, it will be the 4th time for me, and I would come back every year!
