I loved the Way Too Cool 50k. Despite the rain, hail (small!), and cold temperatures, there were tons of volunteers and race organizers out there all day with us providing encouragement and support. The spacing of the aid stations was nice (around miles 8, 13, 20, 26, and 30), and they had everything I wanted and needed. The course was BEAUTIFUL–mostly winding singletrack through misty and mossy forests with great views of the American River and lovely little waterfalls. The dozens of stream crossings, some deep due to the rain, meant that feet were nearly always wet and cold, but that wasn’t an issue with the right socks and shoes. The course was muddy but not bad enough to slow us down too much. And even though there were over 600 runners, I didn’t ever feel like the race was crowded–in fact, I ran alone quit a bit at the end. Great race, I’ll be back someday!

I loved the NYC Marathon. Race morning is a bit crazy–you need to be EARLY, and there is a lot of standing around and waiting. But taking the ferry over to Staten Island resulted in incredible views of Manhattan and really got me excited for the race. The after-ferry bus to the start line was a really long process, but I used that time to eat breakfast and mentally prepare. Starting on the bridge in Staten Island with thousands of other runners was an unforgettable experience–I teared up as we toed the line. The race itself was truly amazing. Running through all five boroughs was fun, and each neighborhood had it’s own vibe–different music blasting and people out having fun. The energy was contagious. There were spectators EVERYWHERE along the course (except the bridges), and they were all genuinely excited and happy to cheer us on. I wore a shirt with my name on it and as a result, never went more than 15 seconds without someone shouting my name and encouraging me. I rarely lost the smile from my face and couldn’t stop thinking about how incredible the race was and how grateful I was to be there. I think the crowd support is what helped me push myself to my limits and get a massive PR. I loved this race, and frankly I’m scared no race will ever live up to how great this one was. Please, enter the lottery every year until you get in and enjoy the ride.
