Ran the half marathon. Liked that the race organizers provided an early start option for marathoners. The course was scenic, much of it on the paved N. Idaho Centennial Trail with views of the lake. Half marathon course consisted of two out-and-backs–personally not a big fan of re-tracing my steps, but it was pleasant enough. Would’ve have liked for race organizers to have a lead bike for the race leaders. Why? Parts of the race trail were narrow and slower runners were blocking the return lane for the faster runners. Other runners had to help clear the lanes for the race leaders. The race shirt was a nice long-sleeve, both women and men’s styles–much appreciated. I also opted for the race sweatshirt in a fun school-bus orangey color–hubby says it will be a camping sweatshirt π . The medal was very pretty with mountains and a little spinning piece on it–different color ribbons depending on which distance you ran. Race was held on Memorial Day Weekend; lots of tourists. Weather was perfect. Couer d’Alene is a spotless, perfect little town. (Heard they even just opened a Trader Joe’s!) We stayed at the Towne Place Suites by Marriott, a short drive from the race expo/start/finish at McEuen Park. This hotel was fantastic–so well-run, clean, breakfast included. McEuen Park is really nice. If you like a nice hike, try the Tubbs Trail nearby for beautiful lake views.

Bentonville is a darling little town, probably best known for being headquarters of Wal-Mart (one of the sponsors). The race expo was held on a rainy Friday and while we were waiting in line for our bibs, it was announced that the race would be postponed from Saturday to Sunday, due to severe weather expected. We scrambled to adjust our hotel and flights to be able to stay an additional day. The expo had soooo much free stuff. We had to be selective due to luggage space. Stocked up on the free Honey Stinger gels and waffles, though.
Separately, being from Southern California, it was exciting for us to watch all of the lightning and heavy rain while we holed up in our hotel room on Saturday, watching reruns of “Friends” and ordering pasta from DoorDash. We just don’t get that kind of weather here.
When race day came, we arrived super-early in order to secure a parking spot in a garage near the start. As it was in the high 20’s/low 30’s, we opted to wait in our rental car until just 15 min. before the start. The race went off without a hitch. Enjoyed running past Crystal Bridges (art museum–a must see), which we had visited after the expo on Friday, the newly-constructed School of Medicine (beautiful architecture), and then through the scenic park. It rained off and on through the race, but not to the drenching point. It was just really cold. The last part of the race is pretty much all uphill. My cousin, who lives in the area, later shared that one of the race directors who she knows personally, likes to design his race courses with a big hill at the end. Interesting to note that along the way up this last part of the course are wood/cardboard cut-outs of said director dressed as the devil staring and mocking you as your legs are begging for mercy–that this hill please end and put you out of your misery. The medal was crazy huge (see pic next to my size 10 foot) and the finisher hoodie super-cute. We didn’t stay for the after-party because we just wanted to get warm.

Loved these two events. A team (18) of us runners, “The San Diego Knockouts,” flew to Philly to run these races. The races were well-organized, fun/funny, full of great energy. The courses were pretty, with colorful autumn leaves overhead, along the beautiful Schuylkill River where many crew teams were out practicing as you ran by them. It was a bit chilly at the start, something we aren’t used to here in So. Cali, but we all had a blast enjoying the spirited folks who dressed up as Rocky, Adrian, Paulie, Drago, Creed, etc. The race organizers are completely lovely and extremely responsive to email inquiries. The race is run with a sense of humor that was appreciated by all of us from out of state. After the race, you’ll have the theme/songs from “Rocky” burned into your brain for about two days. LOL! Mt. Drago was fun, too. It’s nothing to be afraid of and you get a separate time on your race results for the climb and descent. We even stopped to take our picture at the “Welcome to Mt. Drago” sign. (Here in San Diego, we have the La Jolla Half Marathon every spring which goes through Torrey Pines State Park and you climb Torrey Pines hill; Mt. Drago was child’s play compared to Torrey Pines hill. Just sayin’ :)). If you’re running both races, you do need to pay attention to the timing requirements, but they weren’t insurmountable. When you sign up, you’ll get the chance to purchase a red Rocky headband and grey Rocky sweats; many of us did and they are nice quality sweats. Be sure to upgrade to the tech shirt, too. Where else can you get some cool & meaningful Rocky garb and be the envy of your non-running friends? The (3) medals you receive are high quality and gorgeous. After the race, take the time to walk over and get your picture with the Rocky Statue AND at the top of the Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (which has fantastic works of art and is a must-see in its own right). All in all, a wonderful experience!! Thank you Rocky Run organizers for such a memorable event!

I chose to run this race for my Washington state half marathon. (Trying to run a half in every state as a personal goal.) The course was very pretty, but be aware you will run on varied terrain. Course directors were accessible at the bib (not really a packet…) pick-up. They give you your shirt after you finish. Deejay in the morning was a very pleasant fellow to listen to as you waited for the start. (It was 39 degrees, so bring layers.) Many participants drove to the race start, something I thought they didn’t really want people to do. We rode the shuttles from the middle school. Walked from our hotel to the shuttle pick-up; good to walk out our legs after the race. There was just the right amount of well-stocked aid stations staffed with various members of the community volunteering. Everyone was super-nice and encouraging along the way. The participants seemed to be a mostly young-ish group (20’s, 30’s), but exuded very good energy and positive vibes. This 60-something woman had a blast running with them. Plentiful snacks and hydration at the finish. As the two races (full & half) fall in the first weekend of Leavenworth’s signature Oktoberfest celebrations, it would have been nice for the town to have included these events in their extensive Oktoberfest brochure and to perhaps acknowledge the runners (say a banner when you arrive in town – “Welcome Marathon & Half Marathon Runners,” or something like that). Also, the Oktoberfest logo/graphic that the town uses would look great on the race T-shirts. Tie the two events together a little more. Overall, we had a fantastic weekend in Leavenworth and will definitely be back!
