Loved these two events. A team (18) of us runners, “The San Diego Knockouts,” flew to Philly to run these races. The races were well-organized, fun/funny, full of great energy. The courses were pretty, with colorful autumn leaves overhead, along the beautiful Schuylkill River where many crew teams were out practicing as you ran by them. It was a bit chilly at the start, something we aren’t used to here in So. Cali, but we all had a blast enjoying the spirited folks who dressed up as Rocky, Adrian, Paulie, Drago, Creed, etc. The race organizers are completely lovely and extremely responsive to email inquiries. The race is run with a sense of humor that was appreciated by all of us from out of state. After the race, you’ll have the theme/songs from “Rocky” burned into your brain for about two days. LOL! Mt. Drago was fun, too. It’s nothing to be afraid of and you get a separate time on your race results for the climb and descent. We even stopped to take our picture at the “Welcome to Mt. Drago” sign. (Here in San Diego, we have the La Jolla Half Marathon every spring which goes through Torrey Pines State Park and you climb Torrey Pines hill; Mt. Drago was child’s play compared to Torrey Pines hill. Just sayin’ :)). If you’re running both races, you do need to pay attention to the timing requirements, but they weren’t insurmountable. When you sign up, you’ll get the chance to purchase a red Rocky headband and grey Rocky sweats; many of us did and they are nice quality sweats. Be sure to upgrade to the tech shirt, too. Where else can you get some cool & meaningful Rocky garb and be the envy of your non-running friends? The (3) medals you receive are high quality and gorgeous. After the race, take the time to walk over and get your picture with the Rocky Statue AND at the top of the Rocky Steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art (which has fantastic works of art and is a must-see in its own right). All in all, a wonderful experience!! Thank you Rocky Run organizers for such a memorable event!

I chose to run this race for my Washington state half marathon. (Trying to run a half in every state as a personal goal.) The course was very pretty, but be aware you will run on varied terrain. Course directors were accessible at the bib (not really a packet…) pick-up. They give you your shirt after you finish. Deejay in the morning was a very pleasant fellow to listen to as you waited for the start. (It was 39 degrees, so bring layers.) Many participants drove to the race start, something I thought they didn’t really want people to do. We rode the shuttles from the middle school. Walked from our hotel to the shuttle pick-up; good to walk out our legs after the race. There was just the right amount of well-stocked aid stations staffed with various members of the community volunteering. Everyone was super-nice and encouraging along the way. The participants seemed to be a mostly young-ish group (20’s, 30’s), but exuded very good energy and positive vibes. This 60-something woman had a blast running with them. Plentiful snacks and hydration at the finish. As the two races (full & half) fall in the first weekend of Leavenworth’s signature Oktoberfest celebrations, it would have been nice for the town to have included these events in their extensive Oktoberfest brochure and to perhaps acknowledge the runners (say a banner when you arrive in town – “Welcome Marathon & Half Marathon Runners,” or something like that). Also, the Oktoberfest logo/graphic that the town uses would look great on the race T-shirts. Tie the two events together a little more. Overall, we had a fantastic weekend in Leavenworth and will definitely be back!

Nice is the operative word–characteristic of Minnesota:
–Nice people at the start/finish and on the course both cheering and course support
–Nice medal and t-shirt
–Nice policemen and women and fire personnel supporting the course
–Nice course that flows through parks, neighborhoods, under bridges, through tunnels with some wildlife along the way.
Best part – NICE BEER at the finish.
