This was my 2nd marathon after a road marathon. The scenery was breathtakingly beautiful and the cool weather was ideal for a marathon. Unfortunately, the difficulty level was high and the dangers serious. Elevation of 8200 ft, Uphill first 2 miles, many Ups and downhills, then about 5 miles continual uphill. Last 1/4 of the distance was mostly downhill, then a steep uphill immediately before the finish line. The race course starts out as mostly dirt, but much of it becomes quite rocky and uneven. Rain during the race was cooling, but created a lot of slippery, heavy mud. I had to slow down considerably to keep from falling. Despite staying upright, I twisted my ankles and knees multiple times. At times it felt as if I had 3 pound weights on each of my shoes because of the mud. I was following someone and we took a wrong turn which took us off course for about 20 minutes or so before we got back on the course. The bathroom options on course were the woods or one restroom about halfway.
I would love to go back to this trail on my own, but I do not plan to be participating in this again next year due to the dangers and injury to my knee from twisting it.
I would like to see more bathrooms and a less rocky trail. I liked the swag and the finish line announcer and food.
Beautiful but dangerous
