Couple Shuffle-Wichita was not some long awaited race, but rather fit into the race schedule. The local Couple Shuffle conflicted with the Sweetheart Race (see review) and this was a good option. This isn’t a high-production race, but the swag was ADORABLE!, 3/4-length sleeve shirt finally addressed my running club (Sloth Running Club) and Bodies gave the usual “wait to the last finisher” vibe with a smile.
My running partner and I like to travel to races and explore new cities, but this course wasn’t enough to make it a repeat trip. If I lived in town, sure, I’d sign-up for this course race. The 15k was three out-and-back laps with an aid stations at each turnaround. It’s a February race, so of course it is going to be cold, but the lakeside course somehow allowed the wind to hit in all directions. That is pretty much all there is to about the course. I tried to convince myself that it could be pretty in the spring, but probably not by much.
I suspect the cold weather kept some ppl at home and while I am not usually a fan of multiple loops, it was cold and lonely that I welcomed always seeing someone on course. For now, I’ll take my age award and leave the race as the reigning champ of the 15k…for my age group.
Alt Location for a fun race but C+ maybe

Normally I do this in/around KC. Due to some scheduling issues and the addition of a 15k, I went out here instead. Bodies races always have great swag and awesome medals. This year it was a Sloth Running Club long-sleeved baseball T and a plushie sloth medal. There are male and female sloth options available, and both are super cute. The DJ kept the music lit like Bodies always does. What’s my issue then?
The course was just unmotivating. I hate to say that. It’s a triple out and back for the 15k, which makes sense logistically for 5/10/15k offerings. Normally I like out and backs. I did a 50k 3x out and back that I loved. 5k 3x out and back, not so much. The layout is a clockwise-starting course around a lake. You get about halfway around, hit the aid station, turn around and go back to the start. Do it three times. One side is on a service road. The road by the lake isn’t exactly the most scenic. There are few trees. The geese and gulls on the frozen lake were cool to look at, but it’s a pretty bland park. The Tulsa route has a lot more eye candy, as it were. The other runners on the course were all phenomenal though. The atmosphere was energetic and everyone encouraged runners as they passed on the various iterations, I just couldn’t get a fire lit inside me, so I delivered a pretty lackluster barely zone-2 pace. That’s admittedly more on me than it is the race or the race company, it just seemed like a less inspiring course than I’m used to with Bodies. My running buddy liked it a bit more than me I think, at least at first. We run with comms so we can talk even if we’re not beside each other, and she did seem to bring more motivation the first two iterations than I did, which helped me to get my head at least a little more in the game. By the third though she was pretty much phoning it in as well. Some of that may be due to the 3-hour drive immediately before the race, which also isn’t the race’s fault.
Solid C? I don’t know, that seems harsh in light of the fact that the swag is great. If I lived in Wichita I’d probably rate it much higher, as they have far fewer races than we do, and the option for a 15k is much appreciated, but when you’ve grown spoiled with so many great races 40+ weekends a year (and 8-10 more meh ones), it’s hard to get amped up about the star player on the JV league. It lacks the character of a small-town race and can’t deliver with the big players.
Would I do the race again if I was in Wichita? Absolutely. Is it worth a significant drive to get there? Well, depends on how much you want that plushie. I regret nothing! If you’re looking for crowd support and scenic vistas, may want to look somewhere else, but do try to get the opportunity to experience some of that great Wichita runner hospitality, which may have been the highlight of the event. After the plushie.
