This course is a semi-circle out and back on probably the only flat stretch of road for 40 miles. “Road” is however being generous, as it is loose pack or scattered gravel on a dirt surface with no real shoulder through the wetlands. I’ve rucked literally thousands of miles, so I don’t have particularly dainty feet, but they were sore after this one. The race shirt is a soft cotton (maybe a blend, I need to get it out of laundry and check) with a subdued design to match the subdued medal. I really liked it. We all have our blingy medals but this was reminiscent of the subdued flags we wear overseas and had a nice classy feel to it. The finisher area had some excellent brownies, a host of trail mixes and some other things available that I admit I wasn’t paying a lot of attention to due to the abundance of dogs that people had brought with them and my unquenchable need to give boops. There were three water stations on the course and one portajohn location, which was pretty nice considering it’s 4.555 miles out, turn around, come back, so 5 opportunities to grab gatorade, water or pickle juice (thanks for this one!).
It’s not a big production. If you need 30k racers and fans along the way cheering, this isn’t for you. There’s a run and a ruck option on the 9.11 Mile and a standard 5k Run/walk option. I did the ruck, as always. From what I saw I’d say most people did. If you want something different, come here. If you want to try something new in a venue surrounded by predominantly military and first responders, come here. If you just want to see what it’s like to be on large gravel for long periods of time carrying something on your back, come here. If you ever say to yourself, “I don’t know if I stretch my FOOT muscles enough”, come here. You’ll find out. I apparently do not. Whatever the reason you come, do come and enjoy it. I’ll be back again for sure on this one. Met some great people on the course that I’d love to ruck with again.
