First time running the Uncorked Half after hearing about it through SportsBackers, who also organize the Richmond Marathon. The course is an easy decline through the first 7 miles, then a gnarly uphill (10-12% incline over ~quarter mile). Drove the course the day prior to get an idea of the route and partook in some local libations. Pre-race was easy; plenty of parking in the grass lot next to the winery; zero wait for a port-o-potty; informal corrals.

A few items of note:
1. Either due to COVID, or to keep costs/waste to a minimum, there were no cups available at the water stops, so you’ll need to be prepared to stop and fill your own.
2. The last 3 miles is a bit of a mind-bender, as the course takes you past the winery/finish line on a 2-mile out & back through a neighborhood and back around through a thin section of grass, and finally up a gravel hill. Most of the runners I talked to after the race would’ve much rather done the neighborhood O&B at the beginning.
3. Swag bag had plenty of snack for post-race, but your bib is only good for 1 adult beverage. Being a heavy racer in Virginia Beach and frequenting J&A events, one brew seemed a little low-rent, but certainly not enough to prevent running the Uncorked again next year.

Overall: Met some super friendly fellow runners, and unexpectedly pulled a half PR and age group 1st place. New Kent Winery was very accommodating for the post-race party with seating and live music.

The ENTIRE city of Richmond supported this race, and despite being my worst finish as far as time, it was one of the best race experiences I’ve had. The course was beautiful, start/end points were realtively close together, and centrally located with plenty of hotels nearby. The staggered start times & locations for the Full, Half, and 8K was well organized but is still a bit of a busy starting grid. It did however allow our massive caravan of runners from Virginia Beach to take some pre-race photos together and wish each other good luck in our respective races.

Despite Richmond being my worst marathon finish to date, it was probably top 5 as far as race experiences, which really speaks to the overall vibe and course support. If I wasn’t already deferred from 2021 for both Marine Corps Marathon in DC (oct 30th) and Norfolk Harbor Lights Half in Norfolk (Nov 20th), I would absolutely run Richmond again this year.

One of the first J&A events I ever participated in, and have been signing up ever since. I believe this was the year the Guinness World Record was broken for number of runners completing a 5 mile run in Santa suits. The suit itself added another level of difficulty, but made for a good story afterward. For locals, it’s one of the only opportunities to run on the boardwalk while the Holiday lights are up, as pedestrian acces is shut down in the evenings to allow for vehicles. The after-party is always a blast, as are all J&A events.

A handful of us committed to running Shamrock Half virtually down at the oceanfront after hearing the unfortunate news of a live event being cancelled. Without course support and access to Ft. Story, the route was a simple out and back. Weather was unusually perfect.

Signed up to see how my fitness level had progressed since 2018, but opted to pace a friend for her first sub-2 finish, which was just as rewarding as setting a PR, if not more so. Same course, same support, same amazing after party!

I started training to run a half marathon in early 2017 with the intent to participate in Shamrock that year, but ended up traveling for work instead, and the weatherwas some of the worst in the history of the race.
Fast forward to 2018, and I had joined a local run club 2 weeks before Shamrock weekend – while out on the trails, rolled my ankle on a pinecone. Having signed up for the Dolphin Challenge (8k plus Half), I nursed the ankle through Saturday’s 8k, loaded up on ibuprofin that evening, and hoped for the best on Sunday. Luckily an experienced runner friend was there to pace me and the ankle loosened up around mile 6 and set a personal record for the half. Amazing race experience and after party has me coming back every year for the biggest race in the 757.
