Of COURSE you want to be able to brag forever you’ve completed a marathon in DEATH VALLEY!!! The surrounding area is MUCH more beautiful than I had expected, so don’t plan on a P.R., take the time to enjoy the views. Water stations were a bit sparse, but even if they were every 3 miles, it wouldn’t be adequate, the low humidity and sun simply SUCK the water out of your body so PLEASE bring your own water source (Camelbak, water bladder, etc., a bottle won’t be enough) because you’ll be sipping every few minutes. I saw SEVERAL people lying/sitting on the side of the road from heat exhaustion. The first half is almost entirely downhill, which means you’re completing the last 13.1 UPHILL and the sun is higher/hotter. Roadside running on a gravel shoulder became a bit grueling, so I’d hope for a trail the next time, but DEFINITELY glad I did this race. It’s a small, boutiquey kind of event and the medal is rather small BUT the cost is also low. I WOULD prefer to pay a higher price and get a honkin’ big medal to show off, after all, this IS Death Valley!

This is a relatively small, boutiquey race which I really enjoy. The coastal scenes along Oregon’s coast during this race were absolutely gorgeous. The first mile or two is up a gravel road, fairly steep but in a beautiful forest with some view of the coast. Downhill steeply back to sea-level and some really, really pretty scenery. Around mile 10 or 11, there’s a 1,200-foot climb up a road. Incline is a monster BUT I use run-walk-run and it really wasn’t too bad. At the peak, you then descend 1,200 feet back to sea-level and gravity can really pick up your pace on that decline!! Finish at the beach and have a great meal some of the really good restaurants in Pacific City. If you only want Oregon once for your 50 states (as did I), I highly recommend this one!!! You will NOT P.R., but heck, the scenery makes it totally worth it!!!!

GORGEOUS COURSE! BRUTAL, BUT FUN

Nevada’s Valley of Fire State Park contains some fantastic scenery, and the RD developed a course that gives up-close AND wide-vista viewing. It may be the most gorgeous course I’ve run in my 51 marathons. It IS quite difficult, BUT if you’re planning to hit all 50 states, I strongly recommend this for Nevada. Adequately stocked water/aid stations. Course was well-marked BUT, the sign for full-marathoners to return to the Finish area wasn’t the clearest (and at mile 23-ish, “marathon brain” hit me and I read it twice, but took a wrong turn and hit “Dino Land” route which nearly killed me (STEEP ascent that almost had me crawling at some points to ascend). RD and crew were EXCEPTIONAL, friendly and helpful. TWO THUMBS UP!!!!
