If you’re looking for a fast, scenic course, this is a definite must do. The rolling hills through farmland are easy enough to keep a steady pace in low zone 3 for the first 21km.
The downhill from roughly 23-26km is no joke and you want to make sure you’re wearing shoes that won’t leave you with bruised toes. Unfortunately we were running into a headwind, so any hope of picking up the pace at a lower energy cost was waylaid.
The rest of the race was a bit of a grind, thanks to the wind. The short trail section leading to the lake shore was more annoying than anything, but (thankfully) the overlap during the out and back section was reasonably short. If you’re falling off your pace at this point you don’t have to see too many faster runners.
The finish was great – not too many people crowding the chute and your bid reads in early so the announcer can welcome you in by name.
All in all, a great race and I can’t wait to do it again next year. I knocked roughly 24 minutes off of my best time here and would have done even more if not for the wind.
