Bigger isn’t always better. This race is smaller than most races but size does not make a race great. What makes a race great is what this race offers: amazing organization and communication, awesome people (volunteers & participants), amazing swag (race shirts, medals, awards, legacy gift, yummy post-race goodies including the infamous Ben & Jerry’s ice cream truck and get this – FREE race photos)! I can’t say enough about this race and the beautiful area where it is held. This was my 210th half marathon so I know a good race when I run it! Trust me when I tell you – run this race and you will not be disappointed! Enough said!

I loved this entire race experience, even with all of the hills and the fact that I did not run well due to still fatigued legs from running the Boston Marathon just 13 days prior UNTIL I entered the finish line chute. That is where my race experience became a not so great one. I have never in my 45 years of running hundreds of races experienced such a negative finish line experience. There were at least 3 extremely overzealous, rude & disrespectful volunteers in the red coats just trying to move us along, not caring that we needed some time to chill, reflect on, celebrate and photograph our big accomplishment that we just achieved. The chute was never crowded with finishers so there was no need to treat us so poorly! I was planning to go back next year to run the Boston2BigSur again on the original point-to-point course but because of such a negative finish line experience (and the $571.07 price tag) I decided that I WILL NOT return to run this race again. Usually I cry at finish lines because of the joy & elation that running races gives me. At this particular race finish line I cried because I was so hurt and angry by the abhorrent behavior of the race volunteers that clearly were not runners because they would never have treated us that way!

This race has it all! Great organization & communication, great expo, great race schwag, the Beach Bum Club, great race courses, great location & weather and great post-race festivities.
My only complaint is the last 2 miles of the race course on Ocean Blvd. When the marathoners merge onto Ocean Blvd with the half marathoners it can get too crowded on the marathoner’s side of the road because the half marathoners don’t stay on the left side of the road which is designated for the half marathoners and they move on over to the right side of the road which is supposed to be designated just for the marathoners. As a marathoner who has just run 24 miles it is very difficult to weave in and out of other runners, specifically, half marathoners, who are on the wrong side of the road and are hogging the road by either running or walking (which is worse), sometimes 3 and 4 across. There needs to be more of an obvious divider between the half marathoner’s side of the road (left) and the marathoner’s side of the road (right) in that last stretch of race course along Ocean Blvd and race officials policing compliance so that the marathoners don’t get crowded out.
