The first thing you notice on race day is how amazingly well-run it is. Participants have to get a shuttle to the start line from the UM campus and when you get to the loading area, there were so many school buses waiting. No chaos, no drama, just a short line and you’re on your way. The race itself was well supported – plenty of water/sports drink stops and one Gu stop for the half. There were ample porta-potties on the course, too.

The half starts in the surrounding countryside and then meets up with the full marathon course closer to Missoula. That beginning part was beautiful; the course takes you on quiet roads and you spend a good deal of time running alongside the river. The scenery would have been a bit better if it wasn’t so rainy and overcast, but that’s not Run Wild Missoula’s fault! It gets a little awkward when the half and the full courses meet; I’m not particularly fast, so we were meeting up with fast, serious runners on the full course. The roads are wide enough that it wasn’t a huge issue and the road was clearly divided with signage. Still, I could see how that could cause problems.

Plenty of Missoulians came out to cheer, despite the rain! You didn’t see people every step of the way, but there were a good number of spectators as you get closer to Missoula proper. It was a great atmosphere and I really felt the love and support. A couple of people in town had whole setups – speakers, tents. Watching the runners go by was an event – it makes you feel like part of the community when you run past that kind of support.

The finish on the Higgins Avenue bridge was memorable! Great place to end a race.

My only complaint about the race was the very end – it was hard to find the food tent. That was the only thing that wasn’t clearly marked and telegraphed. Also, the food on offer (rice noodle bowls for everyone) struck me as an odd choice. Not that it wasn’t tasty.

The race shirt is going to be one of my favorites for a long time, and I can’t wait to display my medal. The logo for this race is an all-timer.

If you run this race, ABSOLUTELY spend a few days in Missoula. It’s a lovely city and there are so many things to do.
