This was my hardest trail HM but I only ran one other trail HM so far.
400m+ total elevation (and the same total amount of the downhill).
I rate this course as difficult.
Virtually entire HM course goes thru shady forest and this is helpful for a July race.
Very demanding on the foot and leg conditioning as the downhills are brutal and not safe if going fast – rocks and roots. I rolled my right ankle twice but made it to the finish without major loss of tempo.
This is NOT a boring race, one must be fully aware of trail thru and thru.
I hated the worse a long and downhill over the paved road at about 5K in – it is too steep to take advantage of as one needs to be braking down, not speeding up.
One mistake I made – I ran in sunglasses.
They only obscured the visibility in early morning forest – not the greatest setup when one must be choosing the footing all way thru the trail.
I ended up carrying my glasses in hand.
It is a good idea to make the time to enjoy the local scenery.
Devil’s Lake is a local gem to see for those out of the area.
We arrived the day prior and camped.
This gave us an entire evening to check out some of the course (the big uphill) and enjoy the sunset view over the lake.
Race production was just OK.
At one point runners had to cross a relatively busy road without no traffic guards on duty – asking for an accident.
Food was over-priced for the race ticket – a hotdog. 🙁
Beer was just a can from 24 pack given from the back of a trailer.
Swag is just OK – cheapo T-shirt with the lettering that sticks to your back.
The course itself is the reason I gave this race 4/5.
I’d come back just to run the course again.
But I won’t miss the org and swag.
For better organization, better food/drink/swag/fun for the same price AND easier but still fun course – see the Ice Age 50 trail run.

Overall I enjoyed this race in the entirety.
Even the weather was perfect 65F and partly cloudy – nice since a lot of the trail runs under open sky.
The only negative was my own lack of preparation that resulted in a painful and long recovery – the fast downhills hammered my legs.
I could not run for about 10 days.
Never mind that I ran the Monona 20K just a week prior to the Ice Age.
This course is NOT as difficult as the Dances with Dirt at Devil’s Lake.
Total elevation was 200m+.
Still, lots of short, abrupt up-hills and downhills will wear your legs out – did for me.
Scenery is very good; not the Devil’s Lake but nevertheless.
The production was just great.
The vibe from the very start thru and thru.
The post race food was, essentially, all you can eat and the choices were a many – I grabbed a full platter.
Beer of local production on tap – all you care to drink – bring a designated driver (I did).
Looking at you, the Dancing with Dirt org – don’t be cheap.
I paid the same price for the ticket, to get a hotdog and a can of Spotted Cow. 🙁
Swag – a high quality tech long sleeve, a keeper.
I feel good wearing this one.
The medal is cool too.
Overall, I rate the Ice Age 50 race above the Dances with Dirt at Devil’s Lake.
This one is a must race – it does sell out quickly though!
