I ran the half the previous 2 years but ran the full this year. My goal was to qualify for the Boston on my first marathon attempt. I could not think of a better race to do this as the production is always great-lots of things going on to make you forget you’re running. The patients of Children’s Hospital sitting at each mile marker braving the weather to cheer the runners on make you forget that your calf is sore or your hammie is tightening as their daily lives are far more challenging that that. There was music everywhere and the crowd support was constant. The police officers keeping us safe out there were even offering support and cheering us on.
The front half of the course is very easy but the back half is a little more challenging with several slight uphill inclines. Overall an easy course. The temperature, which can make or break any race day is usually perfect here and this year was no exception. With all of these things in your favor how can you ever fail? I didn’t as I did in fact qualify for Boston on my first marathon run ever. Kudos Columbus for always putting on a great show with an inspiring atmosphere!

Second time around and much better experience this year. Very few cyclists, and the pacer for 1:50 was the best pacer ever. He spent the entire race explaining what he was doing and why, coaching the entire time. Wish I could have him everywhere. This course can be tricky as it is an out and back, slightly downhill out and slightly uphill back. Feels great the first half but if you take it too fast the last 4 miles can eat you alive. Swag was great, and the competition great also.

It is a similar course set up like the Little Miami (grade charts look almost exactly alike) and the finish is uphill. We encountered construction equipment parked on the path and had to stop and slowly maneuver around it. The race started at 8:30 and needs to start at 6:30 or 7:00 as there is little shade and this year’s race was hot! It was my 7th half marathon to date and first that I had to stop and walk/run, which I did for the final 2 miles. At that point you are moving uphill and facing east, with the sun directly beating on your face and head (77 degrees at the time). The pacers took us out slow for the downhill portion then realized at the halfway point that we were way behind on pace and sped it up for the second half on the way back which was mostly uphill. I lost them at mile 9. I had planned on a personal best for this race but the late start and high temps stopped all thoughts of that before the race even started.
Swag was nice and the Wendy’s Frosties at the end were a nice touch.
It’s a nice race and I would do it again next year if the start time was adjusted to earlier-at least 7:00 am.

I liked it-mostly. My first time having a pacer and he did a great job-all of the volunteers did. They say the course is flat. I’m newer, running less than a year, but running this out and back course felt like it was mostly slightly downhill the first half and naturally, slightly mostly uphill on the way back. So the average would make one think it’s flat. Scenery is mostly trees on both sides with some peeks at the river but the advantage is mostly shade. With that said there was little room for spectators. I also was not fond of the fact that the race portion of the course was not closed to cyclers during the race and some of them came up from behind extremely quickly with little time to react. This was distracting and made me nervous as they came from both directions quite often so we had to be constantly aware and moving aside being squeezed into the nearby runners.
Great people and competition. The shirts and medals were both very nice. I would love to do it again next year but may not if I’m going to be dodging bikes the entire way. I mean c’mon. I think the cyclists can live for 4 hours without that portion of the trail. It made it so hard to enjoy the peaceful setting.
