I was one of many heartbroken runners when I learned I would not be starting in Big Sur this year and crossing the Bixby Bridge with the twinkling notes of a piano wafting on the ocean breeze. However, I was so pleasantly relieved to experience the marathon in a new way as I ran the Point Lobos loop. Thankfully, I was still able to see and hear a lot of what makes BSM so special. Clearly, race officials know what draws runners to the BSM: The rugged coastline with turquoise pounding waves, Cypress, Redwood and Eucalyptus trees, Taiko drums, the beautiful piano and encouraging spectators sprung from vans or camped in driveways with funny signs and big smiles. I was treated to a magical experience and gift to prepare for the REAL marathon. I have a year to make my knees and ankles stronger for Hurricane Point and the Highlands are no longer a mystery since I’ve run them twice! I wonder how there could be a more beautiful place to run?!
