The first half of the race is very downhill and through beautiful mountain stream-side trails, passing Bridal Veil Falls, it was incredible! The second half is closer to flat and just striaght into Provo which is brutal following the wonder of the first half. They assigned buses to us by approximated time, but the volunteers weren’t all the way ready when I got there for the first bus, and when our bus arrived at the start 2.5 hours before start time, the campfires weren’t lit (and wouldn’t stay lit). Be aware it’s like 20 degrees colder up there than in the valley! I didn’t bring enough clothes and was absolutely exhausted from cold and sick of breathing in smoke by start time. That said, the bags for drop off definitely wouldn’t have held much more than the sweatshirt I was wearing. It was an incredible experience though and probably the most beautiful race I’ve ever run! Just be prepared for a cold, early morning!

Usually, I do the half, but the 10k was great too. I think the swag used to be better, they had duffel bags etc in the past, but tech shirts are great and the age group trophies are nice. The Crown Center area is perfect for post-race recovery and there are always tables and snacks on the lawn. It’s hilly but every race in this city is. One of KC’s best!

This was .y first marathon! The course takes you through so much of downtown KC and a lot of the highlights, like past the Kauffman Performing Arts center, down Ward Parkway, etc. The hills, though, are brutal! I expected nothing less from downtown KC, but hitting the multi-mile slope up on Ward going into mile 16/17/18 was a mind-breaker! It was super humid and pretty warm on race day, and the start line almost made me sick with how packed in and hot we all were! It was a good production and lots of people come out to cheer!

This is a really cool race, being that it’s entirely underground! That alone is super neat, plus supporting Ability KC is great and it’s the only place you can run in a tank top in February in KC. But you kind of have to want to do it for those reasons alone. I’d heard great things about this race, plus it was cool it was underground. Getting into the cave, it felt like you had to have done it before to know where you were going. There were volunteers scattered trying to point the way, it was just hard for it to feel organized when there’s a crowd in a confined area like that. The route made for no spectators along it, just endless turns through tunnels. The miles weren’t well marked and you don’t get signal in the Underground, so I had no idea how far I had run. Maybe it was because it was rainy outside, but several long stretches smelled like trash and sewage. It was probably 80 degrees with little air circulation. I was one of several people who had to stand and wait for 20-30 minutes because our times didn’t process into the system when we crossed the finish line. The shirts are okay, and the age group prizes were hats which are neat but not running quality. They bus you to the tunnels and back to the parking lot, which is great except that I waited for an hour after the race for a bus. It was freezing outside, so standing at the mouth of the Underground for an hour with no signal was definitely not enjoyable. It’s cool to say I did a race underground and I’d do it again just for that, just don’t expect it to be super nice down there.

This was my first half marathon ever, but I’m reviewing it with a few more under my belt. It was a great first one, everything ran smoothly, and the mood at the race was great. Packet pickup had lots of good freebies, more than I’ve seen at other races. It rained but there were still lots of locals cheering from their driveways. It ran mostly through downtown and the neighborhoods, with a stretch of paved trails, so not particularly scenic but it was cute and wasn’t ugly or boring. It wasn’t hilly so it made for a fast course. There was lots of food at the finish line–bananas, recovery granolas, even ice cream and I think they had extra gels there. There was plenty of parking in the Bass Pro lot, even with a lot of people. There was only one place where I was alone on the course and felt like it wasn’t incredibly well marked–near the end in the neighborhoods. The shirt was a nice stretchy dri-fit type long sleeve, and I wear it all the time because it’s very comfortable and a great fall weight. The medals were nice and I even got a metal trophy stand for the medal because of age group awards, which was great. Overall, this might be a staple race for me and I’d definitely recommend it. It’s a very well-run race that has big crowd of runners without being overwhelmingly huge or busy.
