This is a RVA staple that made its debut in 2000. The course is a simple out-&-back with very gradual climbs & decent (total elevation gain of 120 feet, peaks at the half mark). The community typically comes out strong & lines the streets for support; this includes local bands for entertainment. Aid/water stations are on the mile from miles 2 to 5. Yes it can be crowded (registration is capped at 20,000), but the wave start is an attempt to alleviate that on the course. Swag isn’t crazy exciting, finisher medals are middle of the road but Sports Backers does what they can with what they have (not everyone can be NYRR).
Is this an event I register for as soon as it opens? Yes. Is this an event I try to rope as many people into as I can? Also yes.
