The IMT DMM was my 1st full marathon. The Expo was cool but fairly small with only a couple of vendors there and a few organizations with booths to pass through. I attended the athlete briefing on Saturday night which I found to be helpful.
Getting into the corral on Sunday morning was a bit chaotic as there was only one gate opening that I could find. They finally opened up a second corral panel to let runners onto the street and into the lineup.
The course itself was pretty neat. I enjoyed looking at all the old houses in the first 10K and running around the Blue Oval was pretty cool. Getting into the park areas was nice for a few miles but got a little boring as far as scenery and such goes which was tough as you approach the 20 mile mark and there’s not many spectators out there.
Coming back into downtown for the finish was great though. The streets were lined as I approached the finish line which made for a strong finish. I wish they would have had a gate opening closer to the finish though so I could have gotten off the course to hug my family sooner. I didn’t stick around much for the post-race party as my feet were shot. I was happy I could hobble back to my hotel a few blocks away.
I booked my hotel through the race website which was pretty convenient. Water stations were frequent enough for my needs and all of the volunteers were great! Iowa is truly the best!
My only “complaint” is that I was hoping to purchase a cool sweatshirt or jacket like you see all the people that run in Chicago or NYC wearing around and the only offerings were a sweatshirt which they sold out of and a tshirt. The vest that came with the race entry was okay but not something I would ever purchase probably on my own.

Overall it was a great experience for my first marathon and I will probably be back for a better time in the future!

First 30K event consisted of 2 loops around the course. The hills grew on the second loop! Definitely a learning experience. The volunteers were great and the SWAG was pretty cool – lots of goodies from businesses around the area! It was nice to have a drop bag area as you came around each loop. The aid stations were well stocked with friendly volunteers. Definitely would recommend.

This race was spectacular! From the aid stations, to the course markings, everything was well thought out and super accommodating for everyone! It was a well-organized event with good communication up until race day. The finisher medals were small jars filled with water from the actual spill-way at Lake MacBride – how cool!

Everyone involved was committed to giving runners the best experience out on the trails for this inaugural event. I plan to be back next year!

I have run the Driftless Half Marathon 3 times now and plan to come back again in the future. The course is challenging with the rolling hills and one large hill around mile 7, but typically the timing is during peak leaf week in northeast Iowa so the colorful view makes up for any misery your legs might be in.
The race offers a shuttle to the start as it is point-to-point and has had a bag drop 2/3 years I have done it which was very well appreciated.
The volunteers are great and the race definitely offers a small-town friendly vibe.
The race board had troubles with their finisher medal supplier this year so did not offer 2022 medals, but everyone received a medal from a previous year and a silicone cup as finisher swag as well as a shirt.
Overall this is a great race that I would definitely recommend to anyone who’s not afraid of hills!

The Newbo Run is a must if you are a runner in the Cedar Valley. The race director was great but had issues with the megaphone or something during the start and I don’t think anyone 50-feet from the start line could hear anything they were announcing, or the National Anthem.
My goal was to finish in 2:00 so I ran along with the pacers who ended up running much faster than a 2-hour pace for a lot of the course. I was really bummed and wished I would have just ran my own race.
The race itself is on a fairly easy course following mostly paved roads but the half breaks off on a trail that was kind of sandy/loose soil which was kind of tough to run on.
There were plenty of aid stations with a lot of volunteers to cheer and hand you drinks which was nice. The after-race event at the NewBo market is fun and they have a lot of unique foods and beer available. Overall it is a fun race that brings a lot of people together in the great state of Iowa.
