This half is pricier than most – I paid 150 something and that was early bird rate. If the views were really amazing that would have justified the price for me but they’re not super special. At end of day you’re still running on a highway. Views of ocean are blocked at parts and there is some construction. Organization top. Ample parking. Swag is fine but I don’t think I will ever wear it – too obviously race promotional and last thing I need is another tech t shirt. One thing that really bugged me was I was so looking fwd to enjoying a beer with my two family members who waited the whole time for me to finish the race and they would not let them in the beer garden bc they weren’t runners! So rude. I get that they can’t give free beer to everyone but at least allow me to buy them a beer! At other races you can pre purchase drink tickets in advance.

I liked this race. I was worried scared about the weather as I heard it can be really humid but conditions were quite pleasant this year. There is a hill around mile 2 and a pretty big hill around mile 10, otherwise it’s nice and flat. I loved the live music along the course and how varied it was – even bagpipes!
As a first timer running the half my tired brain was broken by the double identical mile 11 & 12 signs and it messed up my finish. Realized later one sign was for the 20k, one for the half, but there was nothing to distinguish them. I feel like they should clearly mark mile 12 – half and mile 12 – 20k and make them totally different colors.
I won an age group award but was bummed they didn’t give me the award on stage like the top 10 runners. I had to go somewhere else to collect it and it was a generic race branded mug beer and didn’t say ‘age group winner’ or anything like that on it. It doesn’t take much to personalize these things – even just a little note of congratulations inside the mug would have meant a lot.
There are tasty hot dogs & free beer at the finish and the post race atmosphere on the New Haven green is quite enjoyable! Would run this race again. It’s an easy trip from nyc which has no good half options in Sept.
