I normally am a huge fan of Vacation Races, but this race felt thrown together. The expo and finish line were not as large as other races, but I ran in the first or second year and it might grow. The scenery was ok. The best part of visiting for this race was exploring Shenandoah.

This is a good 4th of July race for anyone because of the many distance options. The farm where it takes place was cute and fun to explore after running. The shuttles from downtown Portland ran smoothly on the way back, but plan extra time to get onto the island. Traffic was backed up causing the bus to arrive not long before the start of the half and some marathoners missed their start time. If you pick an earlier bus, you will be fine.

I will always recommend Vacation Races. All of their races are well done from the packet pickup expo to the finisher food box. The course had amazing views of mountains. The only downside is that it is on a main road into Zion NP. They had it shut down so it was safe, just a little boring to run 13 miles on one road.

This is not just a race, it’s like an all-weekend festival supporting a good cause. I did the 5K and half marathon double and got an Amish-made charcuterie board with the race logo on it. Dinner Friday night was worth the cost and the lunch Saturday is free. Great food, great people, and great atmosphere. The medal for the half is an actual horseshoe!

I will 100% be back for this race again next year. I ran the marathon in the first year it was offered. They had a good course, but I should have trained on trail more. Trail shoes vs. road shoes is the debate because the last 5 miles are paved; go with trail shoes if it is wet at all. Running this in the rain and mud was brutal but super fun. The medals are amazing, and support on the course and at the finish line was phenomenal. My only complaint was there was no drop bag option for the marathoners.

The location was a bit overwhelming. You should spend time in the actual Devil’s Lake State Park if you do this race; the race briefly crosses into it for one view of the lake. It was fairly easy for a trail run, but support and swag were lacking. The lunch after the race had no vegetarian burgers. I also went to first aid for a minor cut on my hand, hoping to cover it up, but they didn’t even have bandaids.

This was a more technical trail than I am used to, so that might have been part of my struggle, but I had so much fun. At times the terrain was very rocky, and the last few miles were basically straight uphill. Definitely not a PR type course, but the scenery was beautiful and I stopped for several pictures. This course inspired me to take up trail running, and I will be back for more next year. Well supported and the medals were beautiful. The shirt is also one of my favorite running shirts now.

Everything from packet pick up to the finish line ran smoothly. Aid stations had everything needed. Race swag was great plus they have many additional options for purchase including a shirt with everyone’s names on the back. The course itself was a bit challenging with uphill portions on the road and rugged trail but it was well marked and had photographers in several spots. Overall I had a ton of fun and a great trip to Arizona.
