This is a gorgeous race, relatively flat with incredible views and typically perfect weather. It’s also well-organized, with an abundance of delightful volunteers! The two aspects I’d urge race directors to work on for the future: 1) controlling disposable cup waste. The run tracks alongside some of the nation’s most iconic marine protected areas and waste can easily blow into the ocean. While most runners made an effort to throw cups in garbage cans, these were already starting to overflow and I saw a lot of runners tossing their cups on the ground past the cans. 2) Level of amplified noise at the start line and in the tunnel. Both I and many of the runners around me were grimacing in pain and holding our ears at the decibel level at the start line (announcements and blasted music) and even worse in the tunnel where the speakers were reverberating off the walls and were just deafening/painful. It was too much!! Other than that, awesome race.

Not for the faint of heart – waking up at 3:30 to get the bus, huddling with other runners in the dark at the start in the cold and fog, the hills but even more than the hills, the vicious cant of the road that makes your IT band scream, the 30 mph headwind… but all of it worth it for those insanely beautiful views, the taiko drummers, piano at Bixby bridge, and the sweet volunteers all along the way! And really well organized especially given the remoteness of the event and the number of runners. Every year I swear i’ll never do it again and then by a week later I can’t wait for the next one!
