For 22 of the miles, it’s like running through a football stadium that doesn’t end. People show out to cheer and support EVERY runner – not just the ones they know. The people of New York always get a bad rep for not being “nice” but DAMN do they support their boroughs and the people running through them.

Definitely write your name on your shirt, because people will be chirping at you all race. If there was ever something to help you push through a fairly tough course (mainly the amount of foot traffic around you ~50k of your closest friends) the supporters will make every step of the race feel brand new. It’s an incredible turnout and find it hard to believe any other race can live up to the crowd.

This race has an incredible route past cruise ships, south beach, downtown and residential Miami. It was brutally hot for my first ever marathon this year (last year for my first half was also intensely hot) and cramping seemed to be a common occurrence. Weather down here is always unpredictable, though. It could easily be a course to get a PR with beautiful scenery around you.

There are areas with great support from on-lookers ; but if you are completing the full, be aware you will only have your fellow runners to cheer you on for most of the second half of the race. A lot of the last 13 miles are residential so you need to rely on yourself and the runners around you for your continuous motivation.

The race is really well managed: getting into the middle corals always seems to be an issue before the start so get in there early if you are A-F. There is water almost every mile which is a beautiful sight to see in Miami heat. The swag is great, and the people are very friendly. All things considered it was a great choice for my first half and first full. Nothing can be done about the unpredictable weather, so be prepared for anything – but mainly for the incredible views.
