This was my first attempt at 100 miles, and you never forget your first. With a combination of beautiful scenery, awesome volunteers and gnarly trail, running this was a magical experience. I definitely recommend it to anyone curious about the 100 mile distance… just be warned: IT IS HARD. Almost half of the participants failed to finish.

Though the course is a monotonous 1 mile loop through a municipal park, this fun 24 hour race offers a bevy of mental and physical challenges. Plenty of day-time heat, no shade and a 10pm Friday night start make this race unique on its own, and the smorgasbord of aid station fixins’ and festive course decorations add even more charm. This is an ultra race put on by ultrarunners, so you can be sure that much thought has gone in to every single detail.

If it snows… a lot… you are in for a BIG challenge. In 2014, when I ran this, there was about 8 inches of snow the night before. It took me longer to run the half-marathon than it usually takes to run a full, that’s how much difficulty the snow added. The other challenge is the 3ish mile loop that you have to keep running (a la the film Groundhog Day), but the post-race spread (great craft brews and homemade chili!) makes all the effort worthwhile. Great volunteers and organization!

If you like roller-coaster courses and want to fly down some rugged hills for 30 miles, this is a race for you! Held in the middle of nowhere central Illinois during the beginning of Spring, this ultra race follows a 10-mile looped course with lots of elevation change, that is sure to make you tired! While considerably hilly for the Midwest, the great views and volunteer support will keep a smile on your face. To me, it seems like the weather will make or break this course. I ran it during a perfect weather year — no rain and no mud. If it’s rainy and cold and sloppy though, it will add many degrees of difficulty.
