I came back to run the Kalamazoo Marathon again this year, and it continues to stand out as one of the most community driven races I’ve experienced.
What really makes this race special is the support from the local community. Businesses all around town get involved offering discounts ( we took advantage of several 15% off deals), and it really encourages you to explore Kalamazoo beyond just race day. Between the restaurants and small shops, it turns the weekend into more than just a race it feels like an experience.
The race organizers have also really stepped up the swag this year. The marathon jacket was actually part of the standard giveaway, which is pretty incredible and it felt like a big upgrade from typical race gear. They also had additional items available for purchase like stickers and other fun extras if you wanted something more.
Logistically, everything was smooth. Parking was easy, getting to the start line was stress-free, and the whole event felt well-organized from start to finish. The health expo was another highlight, really well done, with lots of local groups and some give away swag.
We stayed at The Kalamazoo House, which added to the experience. It was a cozy and welcoming place to stay, and having that kind of local charm made the weekend even better.
As for the race itself, this year was tough for me. But honestly, I made the best of it by leaning into the fun side of the course. I enjoyed everything from donuts to bacon along the way (and plenty of water), and that’s part of what makes this race unique, you can take it seriously, or you can just enjoy the ride.
Overall, the Kalamazoo Marathon is more than just a race, it’s a full community event. I’ll definitely be back again.

I absolutely loved the Bear Lake Ultra! I camped the night before the campground was great with clean bathrooms and hot showers, and they even served a free spaghetti dinner for runners. The friendly, welcoming environment made it easy to feel at home. Many runners return year after year, and I can see why.
The aid station was amazing full of energy, creativity, and incredible food. They even brought Christmas to October, making the whole experience entertaining and memorable.
The 3.1-mile loop was challenging in the best way, with a mix of hills, downhills, bridges, and deep woods. The course never got boring every section felt unique and kept things interesting from start to finish.
I’ll definitely be back. This race is a perfect blend of community, challenge, and fun.

The Kalamazoo Marathon quickly became one of my favorite races! From the moment we started, the community support was incredible, families cheering from porches and creative signs. The neighborhoods, trails, stadium, city roads, and bridges kept every mile interesting. The course was very organized.
Yes, the hills are real, but so is the amazing energy from volunteers and spectators. The aid stations were perfectly placed and the volunteers were absolute rock stars. They even had people riding bikes to offer aid if needed.
I also love that Kalamazoo offers generous pacing support all the way to 6.5 hours, making sure everyone feels encouraged to reach that finished line.
This was a very supportive marathon atmosphere. Thank you Kalamazoo for delivering an amazing experience . Already looking forward to next year!
