I was skeptical about the February race date, but trusted the internet search results that presented southern Utah as a bastion for mild winter weather. I convinced my Texan boyfriend to sign up with me, so of course it was 10-15 degrees in Virgin, UT at the start.

Despite the logistical issues brought on by snowfall the week of the race and extreme cold the morning of the race, Vacation Races came through to put on a great event. Even through some last-minute changes, communication was excellent as ever, and they actually spent money on a warming tent for those of us who took shuttle buses to the start. Staying warm while we waited around absolutely saved the day, and I respect the organizers so much for putting safety first. This was my fourth Vacation Races event and I can’t wait to do another.

The course was beautiful, aid stations were plentiful, shuttles on race morning were efficient, the town was lovely, the park was gorgeous. I’d recommend it even if the February date sticks.

This race took place in May, which unbeknownst to most of my group, can bring about wintry conditions in the Grand Canyon. Thankfully, I had looked at the forecast and packed appropriate clothing, but nothing could have prepared me for the mud run to come. Snow and rain had turned most of the course into a big, sloshy mud puddle. Now that the race has been moved to October, the probability of such an event is lower, but keep in mind the trail conditions may be difficult when wet.

Despite running a personal worst time, I left the race with a very positive impression. I was there to visit the national park and enjoy a trip with my friends, so the race itself was a small component of my vacation. The organizers did a fantastic job, and one in particular was incredibly friendly: he made conversation with me before the race, and picked me out of a crowd after I finished to ask how it went. From the expo to the post-race hike in the Grand Canyon, I had a wonderful time. Everyone had such a positive attitude, and it made me want to make Vacation Races a yearly event on my race calendar. I didn’t run for time, but I had the time of my life.
