The race is fun. This was my 5th half and I’ve run some of the other distances in years past. The swag and expo are great, but I love the race on Sunday.

This year I was a bit undertrained, but had a blast out on the course. There are a lot of spectators cheering folks on, thousands of volunteers, and the aid stations are great. It feels like a big city race but has all those small hometown race touches.

The course is challenging, but manageable. I recommend training on hills. They make the tough parts as fun as they can!

The thing that brings me back to the Flying Pig, after having run several other races, is the community of the Flying Pig. The race course feels like one giant party and people of all types are out there cheering you on – encouraging you up the hills – making you smile – and generally celebrating your hard work! My only complaint – terrible race shirts every year!

The weather was a cool fall morning, perfect for running. The course does have some hills – I would describe them as rolling and the toughest one is at mile 11 – not because it’s the biggest, but because it is mile 11. It is a smaller race and was nice in terms of not running in a pack and not having to weave around runners.

I did not train as I should have for this race, and it was tough. I ran with my dad (his first half!) and we struggled with some of the hills, especially later in the course. Running through campus is beautiful, the race swag was okay – did not like the race colors being black and green instead of red and white! This is my slowest half by far!

I really liked that each mile is dedicated to a child from the children’s hospital, gives each mile a little more purpose. The course is pancake flat (at least to me, folks talked about “hills”) and I was able to get my PR at the time. There was good crowd support, although I didn’t know the area very well. Expo and processes were smooth and well organized!
