Overall Rating: Great race, excellent venue.
Course Difficulty: Flat and fast. Very easy course, as it is 2 laps on a 100% paved path, excellent for PR or first timer. There were a couple of sketchy areas where you ended up under bridges with some homeless folks, I may just be a little paranoid because I’m a country boy, but it’s part of the course, so giving a heads up.
Course Scenery: It was dark, so it wasn’t the normal running scenery, but lit area of the the path ran along the river and it was just a very pretty laid back run. There was a section that ran along a pretty busy road (moderately scary) next to the interstate, which wasn’t very scenic, but it was only about 1/2 mile of the course.
Race Production: Fantastic. Aid stations were as promised, staff was kind and helpful, and no hitches in the packet pick up.
Race Swag: Nice buckle and comfy tee.
My Performance: Not great, but not terrible. I was sick for about 10 miles of it (which kept me from getting a PR), and thought maybe it was the late night run…truth is, you can’t consume PB&J, pickle juice, Oreos, Gatorade, Pringles, and Vanilla wafers in one setting and be ok…who knew??? If I had been a little wiser with my fueling, it would have been a very strong 50k.
Final notes: First time back out since my mental crash at Eagle Up, and it went well. Had my wife and youngest son on the course with me, and there is nothing better to lift the spirits. This is a fantastic race with a great organization. If you’re in Wichita, or looking for a Kansas race, I can wholeheartedly endorse this one.
Nice Urban Kansas Ultra
