Tyler Brown’s “I Hate to Run” Memorial 5K is flat and fast. Long sleeve tech tee and free beer glass and beer to finishers. This year’s guest race starter will be the 1996 Olympic gold medalist Anthuan Maybank, and he will also be at the start of the race to greet participants.
This run helps to fund SummerCollab’s Tyler’s Camp, which has offered more than 600 of Delaware’s low-income middle-school youth a chance to explore new ideas and uncover unknown talents. Campers in the program spend 6 weeks of their summer participating in a suite of music, technology, sports and art opportunities, coupled with daily leadership development workshops, STEAM-based curriculum, and literacy instruction – all at no cost to the camper’s family!
Research has established literacy as a social determinant of health. SummerCollab seeks to reverse summer learning loss and ultimately increase academic and life success by providing every camper at Tyler’s Camp an hour of targeted literacy support each day. 80% of our campers show growth in reading comprehension and return to school in the fall with self confidence in their literacy skills and an increased interest in learning that will ideally lead to high school graduation and other positive life outcomes.
Tyler Brown was the living embodiment of a Renaissance man. He was an artist, musician, wrestler, rugby player, lacrosse player, YMCA camp counselor, student, community servant, and friend to many. At the age of 17, Tyler was tragically killed in a car accident. With your generous support, Tyler’s presence will continue to be felt in the impact that Tyler’s Camp will provide.
