The Tuscobia Winter Ultra is a human powered run, bike or ski event held on the Tuscobia State Trail in Northern Wisconsin… in the middle of winter (read – on snow/ice/slush covered trails). Participants can compete in the 160-mile or 80-mile event.
All distances are what we would call semi-supported. This means that we will provide food/drinks and your drop bags will be available at the checkpoints. Patronizing local businesses is encouraged and in that respect racers may use product/services of local businesses as long as no race rules are broken. But there is not to be any other outside help, crews, or pacers. Racers may help racers. Even at checkpoints you may only receive aid from volunteers or other racers, and not from friends or family.
Run, Bike or Ski is defined as running, biking or skiing. If you aren’t sure your mode of transport fits the definition, it probably doesn’t. You are welcome to do the race via some other non-motorized mode (e.g., kicksled) and record a time, but will be considered in the “open” category, for which there are no prizes (sponsors welcome if they would like to step up) and “open” category participants will not be eligible for the ITI entry.
Note that any racer may use snowshoes at any time during the race. If you cover then entire distance in snowshoes you will be recorded as a run finisher and therefore eligible for all prizes in this category, including ITI entry.
All racers are to stay on the Tuscobia & Wid Rivers State Trails at all times, unless course markings placed by race officials direct you otherwise (for checkpoints, or reroutes that may be necessary). Parts of the Tuscobia & Wild Rivers State Trails will cross roads, and will also run on roads, and you should follow the trail/road in this case. But diverting to a road that is near the trail is not okay. Of course, you may leave the trail to access a bathroom or gas station etc. – just make sure you rejoin the trail at the same point you exited.
Course
The race will be held on the Tuscobia State Trail in northern Wisconsin, between Rice Lake and Park Falls, including a 4-mile section of the Wild Rivers State Trail connecting the town of Rice Lake to the Tuscobia State Trail.
Tuscobia 160-mile is a qualifying race for Iditarod Trail Invitational!! We also provide one lucky winner of the 160-mile race with a paid entry to ITI. This entry is a guaranteed spot for ITI.
