The Texas Half is part of the Four Seasons Half Marathon Challenge.
Everyone gets our great Texas Half & 5-mile finisher medal!
Great mostly flat course with few turns.
The Texas Half will use the latest chip timing technology, which records your time precisely from start to finish. Your timing chip will be in your bib. Just put your bib on and you are good to go. Please note that because our timing chip is in your bib, you must place your bib above your waist on your front and do not cover it with any other clothing when starting or finishing. We will have awards for the top male and female overall and the top male and female masters in the half. We will present awards to the top three finishers both male and female in the following age groups: 24& Under, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69 and 70+.
When you cross the finish line go inside and look for our results computers. We always stage our awards ceremony in a timely manner. However if you feel you have qualified for an age group award, go to our awards table and talk to our staff there. They will give you your award should you be eligible.

Parking was super easy. Race started at the Irving Convention Center and the parking garage was available. It was $8 to park…that didn’t bother me because I got my race entry free (Mellew, the production company, has a deal where you get free races in exchange for volunteering at events).
Packet Pick Up…I had to pickup on race day (I hate doing that). Packet pickup was at the top of 3 flights of outdoor stairs…it was cold and misty, I was kind of worried about slipping. Also the stairs were odd…they were extra wide which meant a normal gait would have you stepping up on the same foot every time. I made a point of switching every 5 steps, but this seemed like it could be a bit much on the knees for some people (no elevator was available, the convention center would not allow us inside). Packet pickup itself was easy.
Bag Check…was really easy…but apparently during the race they moved our bags downstairs and outside (near the award tent). When I dropped off my bag, that would have been a great time to have told me where bag check would be when I was done. No one told us. So, after the race I climbed the steps again. I passed a cluster of 10 high schoolers who were volunteering. When I reached where bag check was I learned it had moved. So I went back down the stairs and to the race results table. Asked them where bags were…she didn’t know. She did quickly find someone who did. He took me to bag check and told me that there were volunteers at the bottom of the steps to tell people that bag check had moved. Apparently that was the cluster of high schoolers. I told them they hadn’t said a word to me–he apologized and I got my bag. As I was walking back to my car I passed him as he was getting on to the high schoolers.
Race…the race itself was well marked and the course was very clear. I did hear some people saying that the 5m was short changed, but they were just confused. My watch and everyone I knew’s watches clocked in between 5.05 and 5.10m.
Swag…beautiful medal, really nice tech shirt. My only complaint is both the medal and shirt say “Texas Half” with no mention of the 5m. I ran the 5m and it feels a little weird to wear a half shirt and medal when I didn’t run that distance. I’d love to see “& 5m” added to the medal and shirts or a different medal and shirt for that distance.
Overall bad experience

First and foremost, it was advertised as free photos, but apparently photographer didn’t show and they did not have a back up plan. The worst part, they didn’t even acknowledge it. Waiting, waiting, and waiting for photos. Finally emailed them. Two weeks later they tell me there was no photographer. Hell, they could have at least had a few volunteers snap finisher photos on their phone.
The medal looks better in real life than in their Facebook pictures. I really like it. The sweatshirt they give is pretty cool; not a fan of green, but it is cool & unique. The post refreshments were a big let down; orange/banana & half bagel.
Now, in their defense, there was record rain leading up to this event. They had to change the course slightly. The day of the event was very windy. I think they were short volunteers.
Good Winter Half Marathon

This is another Mellew Run.
Multiple pre-race packet pickup locations
Swag – tech shirt & finsher medal.
Pre-Race – lots of parking on site, lots of space inside the convention center to stay warm and dry pre-race.
Course- mix of flat and some inclines but nothing serious.
Weather can be unpredictable – this year it was very windy, 32 degrees, light rain and sleet.
multiple water stops with water/sports drink.
Finish line water/sports drink.
Post race was inside convention center (warm and dry).
A few vendors onsite, water, sports drink, bagels, and breakfast burritos were available.
This run is one of the four in their Four Seasons Half Challenge. If you do all four (one in each season) in consecutive order you get an additional medal upon completion of the final run.
Mellew puts on a good run, some are better than others this one is average but I would run it again.
