This is a 5K in Concord, NH that is part of the Capital Area Race Series (CARS). This is a series of races in the spring/summer in Concord, NH which is my hometown and where my parents live. This was my first time doing this race but I did a few other CARS races last year. They aren’t always the most scenic races but they are always well organized, fun and back of the pack friendly. I stayed over my parents house last night so I wouldn’t have to wake up early though Concord is only about 45 minutes from where I live. The race is at the State of New Hampshire Office Complex and was all on closed roads and parking lots through the complex. Production was overall good. There was a pre race email. Packet pick-up was inside one of the state buildings. My only complaint about production is packet pick-up was slow and the inside area was cramped. It was a rainy day so it may be better days with better weather and more people warming up outside. I do think it may be helpful to email our bib numbers before hand as you had to look it up on a sheet of paper and then go to bib pickup and then shirt pick up. The shirt is a sleeveless tech shirt and is fine. There were also some booths with some free samples and flyers for local races. There were a few porta potties outside. The race is chip timed and has a separate start/finish both with timing mats. It started on time after some announcements. The course is very meh just around buildings but it was well marked with lots of volunteers directing us where to go, mile markers and a water stop in the middle. It is flat, flat, flat. It would be 1 sneaker difficulty but it was a bit tough in the rain as there were a lot of puddles. I pushed myself so hard yesterday at the half I knew today was going to be rough and my finishing time was pretty terrible but as I said one of the things I love about this series is there are a ton of back of the packers and walkers. There were about 200 participants total and there were still nearly 50 finishers after me. That is my favorite part about the CARS series how back of the pack friendly it is. There is no medal which is typical of 5K’s in New England. Back inside there is basic post race food such as bananas and granola bars and also Dunkin Donuts also typical of New England. Overall a boring course but well organized and supportive race. I wouldn’t go out of my way to do this race again but if it fits in my schedule I will definitely do it again. I also plan to do at least a couple more CARS races this year.
