I was visiting Philadelphia this weekend for the Love Run and wanted to see what 5K’s I could find near Philly on Saturday. I was excited to find this one about 25 minutes outside Philadelphia in New Jersey because I love cats! This race raises money to help cats and is cat themed. There was adequate pre race communication for a smaller 5K. This year there was about 200 participants which is twice as much as the year before. The race is at a park and there is race day packet pick-up. I don’t remember if you could get your packet early as I arrived in Philadelphia Friday evening so didn’t look. The entire race is in the park. It’s a bit boring but convenient and keeps the cost down since the race didn’t need to close roads or get police support which allowed the race to have amazing swag. This race had the best swag I have gotten for a $35 5K. Packet included a drawstring bag with cat ears, cat temporary tattoos, chapstick, a mango bar and trail mix. You also got the absolutely cutest polyblend shirt in a nice brick red color. The shirt has an adorable tuxedo cat design. One of my cats is a tuxedo cat so I loved it. The park had bathrooms to use while you wait. The race started on time. The course is pretty meh but as I said I will forgive them because of the swag. It is a double loop course. It starts with about 1/2 mile circle paved trail in the park. There is ten about 1/4 mile on trail. Its not very technical (especially compared to the UTMB race I did the week before lol) but you have to watch your footing and it may slow you a bit. Then it’s about 3/4 mile through the parking lot and on sidewalks near the park. There is a short out and back section that is a bit tight but otherwise there is space. It is mostly flat with a few inclines. With the trail section it’s about average difficulty for a 5K. You do it twice. There was not a water stop which I think is fine for a 5K. There is a finisher clock at the end and it is chip timed. They didn’t give the medals right at the finish line as the area was a bit tight but they gave them out after at a picnic table. The medal is wooden but nice and big with the race name and a cat carved on it. There were pretzels and delicious cookies at the end. Overall it was a mediocre course but great production, swag and a great cause. Definitely worth running if you are in the Philadelphia area.
