Running along the mighty Rio Grande
Up in the San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado, the Rio Grande begins its 1,800 mile journey to the Gulf of Mexico. The Runoff Runoff marathon, half marathon, and 6K follow the scenic headwaters of the Rio Grande, starting and ending in the historic mountain town of Creede, Colorado. Organized by the Headwaters Alliance (formerly the Willow Creek Reclamation Committee), this event raises funds to support river restoration and stewardship projects that improve water quality, wildlife habitat, recreation, quality of life, and the overall condition of the Rio Grande headwaters.
The Runoff Runoff was started in 2010 as a way to raise awareness of local and global water issues. Since 2010, the race has grown thanks to the partnership and support of so many organizations and individuals. Through it all, the purpose of the RunOff RunOff remains the same; to educate and engage with you about three important interrelated issues:
1. Legacy Mining Impacts and Water Quality
2. Water Quantity and the Connection with Downstream Communities and Ecosystems
3. Human Rights and Access to Water Worldwide
We strive to preserve these glorious mountains and bubbling tributaries here at the headwaters of the Rio Grande. We take our upstream responsibility seriously, and deeply value your support in this work!
Proceeds from Registration and Donors will benefit Headwaters Alliance. Help us continue to improve the health of our local streams and river, plants and animals, and people!
We Strive for Zero Waste
Zero waste is all about limiting what goes to the landfill. At Headwaters Alliance, we are committed to our environment and are taking steps to ensure the Runoff Runoff respects zero waste practices as much as possible, such as:
- Ample recycling bins
– Fully recyclable or reusable silverware, plates, and cups
– Limiting food waste (we are working on collecting food waste for composting down valley)
– Plastic-free
It takes everyone to make zero waste happen, so we invite you to partner with us in participating in zero waste practices of your own. Bring your own cup! Bring your own silverware! Limit your food waste! Put things in the recycle bin!
