2018 EVENT CANCELLED. From race website: Rovaniemi Marathon will not be held in summer 2018. The event, organized by the Arctic Marathon Club (AMC), has gathered around 900 participants at its best. AMC has been in charge of the event for over twenty years.
“Almost the same people have been involved in wagering for years and the biggest burning of a running event has disappeared,” says Maarit Simoska, president of the club. The club wants to breathe and concentrate on the diversification of about one hundred members’ sporting lifestyles.
“Perhaps a new enthusiasm for Rovaniemi Marathon will be created, but next year is not the time,” he continues.
Last summer, AMC tried to move the Marathon internationally from Saturday to Sunday. The club was prepared to drop the number of participants, but the number of runners was only about 60 less than in the previous year.
Our economy has remained stable. The situation just begins with the fact that supporting hundreds of people requires so much talk time that we no longer have enough enthusiasm for months to think about security arrangements, route signage, sponsors, car salon or drinking care, says Simoska.
Rovaniemi Marathon has received positive feedback on a beautiful and steady route along Kemijoki as well as well-functioning arrangements for both Finnish and international participants. In Finland, however, other species such as the triathlon and the pathway have dumped participants in long-distance running events.
