The annual Richard S. Caliguiri City of Pittsburgh Great Race started in 1977, when former Pittsburgh Mayor Richard S. Caliguiri established the race as a “community fun run.” Since that inaugural competition, 250,000 people have participated in The Great Race, making the event the largest 10K race in Pennsylvania. The popular fall fitness classic has expanded to include a 5K run/walk, a running clinic, the Junior Great Race, and more.
The Great Race 10K — Pennsylvania’s largest 10K and one of the largest 10Ks in the country — follows a predominantly downhill course from Frick Park in Squirrel Hill to Point State Park in Downtown Pittsburgh. The 6.2-mile route passes through several east end neighborhoods and travels past five college campuses.
The 5K run begins in Oakland at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Atwood Street (at the 10Ks mid-way point). The 3.1-mile course travels along a predominantly downhill course before finishing at Point State Park.

You get to experience much of the Pittsburgh landscape by traveling from Frick Park through Squirrel Hill and into Oakland, and finally along the Boulevard to finish downtown at the Point. This was my 7th year running and I am never disappointed – the weather was a perfect 60 degrees crossing the finish line.

I’ve done this race 3 or 4 times now and it continues to be my favorite. Both the 10 and 5k start in one neighborhood and end in another – there are plenty of hills but that’s to be expected, and you do get some flat miles in. In true Pittsburgh race fashion, there are plenty of people along the course to cheer you on. Shuttles are offered from downtown to the start line which is nice since you end the race downtown. The 2017 race was particularly nice because you got a medal with art designed by Burton Morris (a Pittsburgh native) which is by far my favorite medal I have earned. My only complaint is that the 9am start time is late for my preference (and in 2017 with unseasonably hot weather it was a little miserable).
