First time running this race and I chose the 35k! I wanted to challenge myself. This 35k measured 20.9 miles and had 2860 ft of elevation. It circumnavigates the Briones Reservoir near Orinda on the serene–and usually “permit-only”– East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) trails. This course offers more rolling open fire roads, tree covered single-track, and sweeping views of the watershed lands. It really was a beautiful race. This is one of the “easier” ITR races and brings out more of the speedsters. Because of this, I was towards the back and was out on the trails by myself most of the race. I would see my fellow runners on the open and exposed trail. The course was well marked, so I did not have a fear of getting lost. There were four aid stations on course that were well stocked. One definitely needed to carry extra water due to the aid station spacing. It did get hot at times.
There is a six hour time limit for the 35k and I had no trouble meeting the cutoffs. I finished with 45 minutes to spare.
All finishers received a tech tee and a finisher’s medal. There are age group medals in 10 year increments and the last place finisher in each race receives a horse’s butt trophy. I finished 92 of 95. Close, but far from getting the trophy. :o)
There was an ample supply of post race food, water, and soda.

The half marathon course for Reservoir Dogs was really beautiful and challenging, the elevation was pretty manageable. The two toughest parts were the some of the more technical parts of the trail (around a little landslide) and the heat.
The aid stations are pretty well stocked, but it’s always worth bringing your own hydration and food.
