While best known for the 12,000 acre lake, Red Top Mountain State Park is also a runner’s haven. More than 15 miles of trails wind through the forested park, providing sections for both newer and experienced runners. Named for the soil’s rich red color caused by high iron-ore content, Red Top Mountain was once an important mining area.
The 25K and 50K will begin on the Iron Hill Trail just past the gravel parking lot. We will only be running on the Iron Hill trail which is a 3.9 mile mostly flat loop. It is a mix of compact dirt and crushed gravel with an elevation gain of about 140 feet. It passes along the shore of Lake Allatoona and part of the former iron ore mining community.
There will be one aid station near the start/finish of the loop. 25k runners will pass it three times and the 50k will pass it seven. We will have water, Tailwind Nutrition, Huma Gels, fruit, pretzels and chips. If you wish to bring your own items, we will have an area set aside near the aid station for your convenience. Please keep all of your items in one bag that is no larger than a small duffel or backpack. Also, this area is near the main gravel parking lot so you can head to your vehicle if needed.
25k: Runners will complete four loops for a 15.6 mile journey.
50k: Runners will complete eight loops for a 31.2 mile ultra.
NEW: We’ve added the Red Top Recycle Run. Join us for 3.9 miles around the Iron Hill Trail. This is an untimed, laid-back and fun run! All participants receive a race shirt and medal from one of our past events. The shirt could be short or long-sleeved. Sizes are not guaranteed. The medal could be a finishers medal from another race or an age group award. These could also be made of wood or steel/medal!
We will try to accommodate your sizes but cannot promise we will have it. The awards and shirts might it be from our Hotlanta Half or 5k, Cochran Mill Trail Race, Lemonade Days, or another event we produce! We will be bringing what we have and it is first come, first serve. (No double dipping).
These races will be limited to 250 total runners. Note: There is an 8.5 hour cut-off for all races.
Both races are great for those looking to run with like-minded people, step up in distance or for veterans who want to set a new PR. All finishers will earn their finishers medal!
Why would you run a race with multiple loops?
1. You get to see your friends and fellow runners several times.
2. You know exactly where the aid station is on-course.
3. You will be familiar with the course after the 2nd loop.
4. It’s laid-back and fun!
These races will begin at the Iron Hill Trail just past the gravel parking lot. While you are not required to stop at the aid station, we will be checking you in after each loop.
