I was undertrained but was very happy with my performance for my fitness level. It wasn’t easy with the hills but very doable. I definitely had to stop to take pictures because it was so beautiful. There is a big section that is single track with an out & back, so it was easy to get stuck behind slower runners, and you have to move for each other during the two-way sections. Hurrah for downhill the last few miles. Porta Potties at the beginning of the last section would be nice. Overall, I loved running it. I’ll be back next year it and bringing friends!

I love the different loops out and back on this course. You’re way out there but you’re never too far away from the primary aid station. The course is very smart in its design. Cannot beat the scenery. Beautiful red rocks of southern Utah and the mountains in the distance still have snow capped peaks as the race is always in early March. The weather is absolutely perfect. Not hot, not cold. Always perfect conditions. A great way to break out of winter and begin the running season.

This first time I did this race it was a 55k but I guess they cut out the shortest loop to make it a 50k. The trails are all very runnable and the weather is typically nice this time of year in southern Utah. The red rock scenery of southern Utah makes this race especially beautiful. Be forewarned, it does start earlier than most races and you have to catch a shuttle to the start so be ready for that early alarm clock!

The organization of the event is unlike any other race I’ve participated in. Lyle does a great job to make sure it’s all about the runners and that all their needs are being met. I recommend the Red Mountain ultra and any Underground Runner events to anyone looking for a good experience.

I loved the flower shaped course. This format enabled participants to do 5 loops back to a central aid station. The aid station was well stocked with a variety of supplies. There was also someone keeping track of who had come back, so I didn’t feel like I would be lost out on the trail without someone knowing.

I love the vibe of this event! The trails are beautiful and have really sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and mesas. Over the years Southern Utah has gotten really crowded and it is hard to find anywhere to enjoy the beauty and outdoors that isn’t congested. This course is on trails that are away from all of that. The entire event has a “small town” event feel, but its production value and organization are anything but. Everything from the course marking to the aid station support was top notch.

    Highlights include:
    -Organization
    -Great communication
-Crew and volunteers were all supportive and positive
    -Awesome swag
    -Great course marking
    -Stocked aid stations

If any of these distances are on your race list I can’t think of a better event to check them off than this one!

Very well organized race! Amazing views!
Start/Finish: Parked 100 feet from finish line, picked up my packet, and was bused to the start. Finished the race, walked to my car, and I was off…super easy!
Aid station: There is only 1 aid station on the course, but you pass it 4 times (at the end of each loop). Therefore, you can drop a gear bag at the start and it’s transported to/from the aid station for you! The aid station was super well-stocked with awesome volunteers. The warm chicken broth at mile 28 was magical!
Course: The course consists of 5 loops of mostly single-track trails, but they are all DIFFERENT! The trails are rocky, but the rock is not loose, so it’s very “runable”. Each loop generally begins with a climb and finishes with a nice descent back to the aid station. Each one has it’s own magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and canyons. I can’t imagine a more scenic course in Utah.
Swag: Trail races don’t typically offer much swag, but this one had a nice finishers medal, so I was pleased (it’s really the only thing I want for marathon/ultras). Otherwise, the shirt was short-sleeve cotton (which is OK for me). I finished 30 minutes under the 9 hour cut-off time, but there were still some pancakes and cheese quesadillas left, so I was content.
Weather: craziest weather I’ve experienced. Over the course of the day, we had rain, hail, and sunshine on an almost rotational basis. The wind was really strong at the top of the vistas, but that’s to be expected.
Overall, this is an amazing trail ultra. Highly recommended!
