I love visiting lakeside summer towns during the winter. I love the contrast between the crowded, hot summer activities and the still scenic, if stark, beauty during the off-season. In Spicer, you get to hit up some of the same local restaurants and pubs with ample places to sit, as well as admire the lake and lakeside cottages as you race through the streets. The out-and-back course was about as ho-hum as anything like that, but for 5K, what do you expect? No need for water or hydration, really, and mid-March is still COOOOOOLD. So the frills before and after are what make it: nice T-shirt, and souvenir pint glass. Army coffee mug giveaway for top-20 finishers. And medals for top finishers in each age group. All while enjoying free beer and food inside after the finish. My kinda March morning race!
