The OTHTC High Desert Ultra course in the northern Mojave Desert is a loop route over rolling desert terrain on jeep roads, single-track trails and sandy washes over the Spangler Hills south of Ridgecrest. It offers great views of the Southern Sierras and can provide wonderful running conditions during the month of December. This is a great course for first timers and veterans alike. Runners are supported by 9 great aid stations, about every three miles, with water, electrolyte drink and other ultra-type goodies.
Course elevation varies from 2400ft to 3500ft. Temperatures can vary from 30 degrees to 80 degrees on race day, so layers are recommended.
The OTHTC High Desert 50K Ultra & 30K runs start and finish at the Cerro Coso Community College, Ridgecrest. The course will be marked with chalk and ribbon. Please be aware that you will be running through BLM land and should respect the rights of hikers, mountain bikers, cyclists, equestrians and other runners you might encounter. If you must drop out of the race for any reason, you must go to the next aid station and notify someone at the aid station.
The race is produced by the Over-The-Hill Track Club, a recreational club serving Ridgecrest, California and the Indian Wells Valley.

Beautiful desert scenery (if you’re into that kind of thing). Nice crisp morning to run, with well marked course and soft OHV trails. Up-hills were long but never too steep. Race production was simple but competent. Killer finisher’s medal, hand made ceramic, and awesome runners shirt too. Will go again! And did I mention a finisher’s beer?? Good show.

I liked the trails which were quite easy to run except for some sandy areas. Not a lot of elevation change and and not many scenery changes. There were plenty well-stocked aid stations along the course. The course is well marked, but it is easy to get lost since there was a motorcycle race that was marked with ribbons, too. Pay attention and if you don’t see footprints in the sand, you are wrong. There was a free raffle at the end…
