The Oceana Running Festival is the first event to be held entirely on the runway at Naval Air Station Oceana (Apollo Soucek Field), where the world’s best aviators fly. The inaugural event will consist of three race distances that include the “F-18K (11.18 miles), the “Hard Deck 5K” (3.1 miles), and the “Tomcat Challenge” (consisting of the 18K plus an additional 2.82 miles for a total of 14 miles). The Tomcat Challenge honors the powerful F-14 Tomcat which flew from Oceana for many years and took its last flight from Oceana in 2006.
The registration fees for the F-18K and Hard Deck 5K start at $50 and $35, and all Military Members receive a $5 discount. Registration for the Tomcat Challenge ($10 add on) will be available to the first 250 participants who sign up. Tomcat Challenge participants will receive a unique one-of-a-kind medal in addition to a special challenge coin commemorating the Tomcat and their 14 Mile Run. Early registration is encouraged to secure your spot.
F-18K
The first question we heard was, “Why 18K?” For us it was a no-brainer. We wanted to pay homage to the F-18 Hornets that call Oceana home. You will love the flat scenic, course with Hornets stationed along the route to guide the way!
Starting and finishing on the flight line at Oceana is an experience you do not want to miss. Your registration also provides you a (currently Top Secret) event premium, a killer medal, and “access granted” to the After Burner Post Race Celebration.
Hard Deck 5K
The Hard Deck is the low limit when fighter pilots are in a dogfight simulation. Naming this race the “Hard Deck 5K” was a nod to those Naval Aviators that make their homes here.
This course starts on the longest runway at Oceana; 5R. Run past the Navy’s best fighters stationed on the course to point you in the direction of the After Burner Post Race Celebration. Your 5K registration also provides you a (currently Top Secret) event premium and a killer medal.
Tomcat Challenge
While Naval Air Station Oceana is currently home to a large number of F-18 hornets, many of the leadership serving there has experience flying f-14 Tomcats. to honor both the jets and pilots that flew them, we are offering the “tomcat challenge.”
Participants in the Tomcat Challenge will start and complete the 18K route with all the f-18K runners. After completing the 18K route, tomcat challenge runners will continue for an 2.82 mile extension, bringing their total distance to 14 miles.
