This is a 2 (ish) mile loop completely inside the Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh, NC. So basically you’re running past gravestones for up to 24 hours. Sounds like fun, right? Actually it is. The race staff, volunteers, and the runners are all upbeat, and there were even some goofy holiday decorations in the start/finish area.
The course is paved, with just a small section of grass where you cross a bridge over a creek. There are a few moderate climbs per loop, but nothing really strenuous.
Good selection of food and drink at the start/finish, both hold and cold. Also a big heated tent you can change clothes in or warm up a bit.
This race benefits Healing Transitions, an organization that helps people overcome addictions, and likely you’ll encounter some of them running the race or volunteering. The stories I heard are very inspirational.
The only hiccup I had was this was the first year they’d offered specific distances as well as 12/24 hours, so there was a miscommunication about how many laps made up 50 miles. It got straightened out, and I’m sure they’ll clear that up next time. I definitely recommend this event as something unique!
One of a kind (I think)
