The race name has the word mountain in it for a reason! 🙂 You will have a LONG climb towards the beginning of the race. It’s gradual so not too steep, but it’s a climb.
Mile 9.5/10 – 13 (just before the last .1) was tuff! Your tired to begin with and then there’s another LONG stretch of multiple hills that never seem to end.
It’s Alamogordo, though…..what do you expect?! It’s a hilly/mtn town so come prepared.
The race was well orchestrated. Not a big race….couple hundred people for the half/10k/5k? Easy same day packet pick up. Plenty of parking. We arrived at 7:15 for a 8:00 a.m. start. Got our pkts with no wait and returned to the warm car to wait for the start.
Weather was picture perfect. However, based on talking with others this race can and has had all types of weather in Nov. Again, be prepared. No one can control that.
One tip weather wise….. when looking at weather forecast for race morning temps be sure to look at Alamogordo and not Las Cruces (if that’s where you live). The sun will rise on the Alamogordo side of the mtn first and thus likely will be warmer there than Cruces for race start. For example today the race start in Gordo was 10 degrees warmer than it was in Cruces at the exact same time. That can be a big difference when planning what to wear.
Race shirts……
non white – thank you!
long sleeve – thank you!
kids sizes or XS – thank you!
Good medals
Good age category medals
Good finish line food – HUGE finish line burrito AND had a veggie option
They offer a $5 discount if 4 or 5 people sign up in your group.
Be prepared! The race is all on paved roads or park paths, though.
Wow....scenic & hard course, but GREAT!
