This was my first time doing a trail marathon. Will it be the last…no, probably not. But it has given me a new respect for trail running, especially when mountain trails are involved. The route here took roads to get to a trail that immediately put the brakes on running. Between the steep inclines, 2K feet elevation gain in the next two miles, and the creek/waterfall crossings, this course gave me a run for my money. And that was just one loop–we had to do 2 loops and a third time partway. Aid stations were only at the loop start and at the exit of the trail, so hydration was key. With the SC heat and humidity, I was not fully prepared. Just finishing, even though it took twice as long as a flat road marathon, was my victory. The views along the way and camaraderie exhibited between other runners also made it worthwhile.
