Race the World’s Best IRONMAN in Cairns
With a truly spectacular destination, stunning course and electric atmosphere, you can see why the Cairns Airport Asia-Pacific Championship IRONMAN Cairns has earned the title of World’ Best IRONMAN. It’ a race where a world heritage listed rainforest meets one of the natural wonders of the world – the Great Barrier Reef … no wonder it’s known as the ‘Race in Paradise’.
Roka Swim Course – 3.8km
Starting on Palm Cove Beach, the first leg in your Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns journey will have swimmers complete a 1 lap, anti-clockwise course. Starting from the beach in a Rolling Swim Start, please make sure you seed yourself according to your ability.
Bike Course – 180km
**Please note the cycle course has been modified from previous years** Cyclists exit Transition 1 (T1 – Palm Cove) and head out along Cedar Road onto the Captain Cook Highway turning left and heading south for 250m to the southern turnaround before heading north. Note: at the southern turnaround IRONMAN athletes must merge across IRONMAN 70.3 athletes in order to make the turn. Please be aware of other cyclists around you during this process. Athletes continue up the Captain Cook Highway to Port Douglas, taking in the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and seaside rainforest that Tropical North Queensland and IRONMAN Cairns is famous for. Cyclists will head into Port Douglas via Old Port Road and Port Douglas Road, where crowds will be cheering you on. Cyclists will turn left onto Port Douglas Road before making a U-turn prior to Ulysses Street. Cyclists will then make a second U-turn along Port Douglas Road prior to the Barrier Street intersection and return to the Captain Cook Highway via Old Port Road. The undulating, and winding course will take athletes back to Palm Cove where you will start Lap 2 at the southern turnaround. Once cyclists have arrived back in Port Douglas they will follow the Captain Cook Highway south, past Palm Cove and through Smithfield, down Sidlaw, Dunne and McGregor Roads before turning onto Yorkeys Knob Road and rejoining the Captain Cook highway down into Cairns CBD and into Transition 2 (T2 – Fogarty Park, Cairns).
Hoka One One Run Course – 42.2km
**Please note the run course has been modified from previous years** Runners will exit Transition 2 (T2 – Fogarty Park, Cairns) to commence the first of 4 laps which begin by heading south towards the Ports North Marina, Cruise Liner Terminal and Hemmingway’s Brewery. Runners then proceed back past the finish line venue and Esplanade Lagoon and continue north through the parklands adjacent to Cairns Esplanade as far as Airport Avenue. Athletes then complete the first lap returning through the parklands to the Esplanade Lagoon. Now is the time for all athletes to enjoy the experience of running through the vibrant ‘hub’ of the Cairns Esplanade, one of the most popular destinations, for both tourists and locals, in Cairns. Run past the Cairns Esplanade Lagoon, where many locals spend a sunny day, take in the impressive site of Mount Yarrabah across the water, and enjoy the atmosphere along the Esplanade. Unfortunately for athletes, you will have to settle for one of the aid stations on course, rather than stopping to enjoy a ‘cold one’ as you finish up the last few laps of the race, but the energy and support of all the spectators in the area should help to carry you through to the finish line. If you have friends and family supporting you on the day, this is where they need to be to catch all the action of the final leg of your Cairns Airport IRONMAN Cairns journey.
