A Hidden Gem
IRONMAN 70.3 Traverse City is in its second year and has already made its mark as a must-do on the North America race circuit. This 70.3 event offers athletes and spectators the perfect combination of scenic beauty, fun winery experiences and family-friendly outdoor recreation.
The one-loop, clockwise swim takes place in beautiful West Grand Traverse Bay. Spectators will have a prime view of the course as athletes will swim past the Open Space Park before exiting at Clinch Park Beach. The water temperature is typically in the high 60s to low 70s. The swim is a rolling start keeping all swim buoys to the right.
The out-and-back bike course has very few turns and takes athletes west from Downtown Traverse City out to the heart of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Empire. Athletes will turn south in Empire and follow the iconic M-22 highway for several miles before turning around and tracing their path back to transition.
The flat and fast, two-loop run course leads athletes from downtown, out along the east side of Boardman Lake. Runners will find lots of shade as they complete an out-and-back section on the east side of the lake before heading back downtown to start lap two. Runners will finish in front of the historic State Theater on Front St. in downtown Traverse City.
