SoCal Vibe
Start your season where the sun shines and beach breezes greet you at every turn. This laid-back community is your perfect race-cation to kick start your season, lined with palm trees and sunsets. Oceanside is a whole vibe – from the stunning beaches to the thriving downtown area. Athletes can walk from the hotel to the venue to the beach, and everything in between. Find adventure for every wavelength.
Oceanside features two incredible opportunities only athletes can experience come race day. From swimming in the Oceanside harbor and biking throughout an activity military base, Camp Pendleton. Athletes will experience one of the top-rated run courses along the Pacific Ocean, stunning views, spectator lined and finishing along the Strand.
Swim
The swim will have a rolling start corral on the beach. One will go thru the waves out to the first red buoy then turn to head north towards the harbor entrance which is approximately 4/10ths of a mile. Once thru the harbor entrance, will swim towards the fishing pier then turn right (which is due east so be prepared for the sun in one’s eyes) to exit out of the water at the boat launch. Then one will head thru the chute that runs along the length of the transition to the wetsuit peelers before transition.
Bike
The bike course takes athletes from beautiful Oceanside Harbor through Camp Pendleton, an active military base. This area will give athletes a taste of what Southern California’s true beauty entails. After the first 20 miles, athletes leave the coast to head inland. There athletes face the San Mateo Hill and 2 other climbs that will test you both physically and mentally. The final few miles are flat but are usually greeted with a headwind as you head towards the Oceanside Harbor to start your run course.
Run
The two-loop run portion is considered flat and fast but be prepared for the turns and inclines/declines as you go from beach level to street level.
The two-loop, 13.1-mile run course begins at Transition above the Oceanside Pier, down onto the Harbor, on The Strand and through coastal neighborhoods before a spectacular finish.

There’s a good reason this race is one of the top 70.3s on the North American circuit. Being close to the birthplace of triathlon, this race lives up to it’s reputation.
The course is challenging with an ocean swim and relatively hilly bike course. However, the scenery alone makes it worth it. The swim is in beautiful Oceanside beach to Oceanside Harbor. The bike ride through Camp Pendleton is epic. It’s really cool to get to ride through Camp Pendleton, which would otherwise be closed. The run course is two loops and probably the least scenic, but you are still running right along the ocean with the waves crashing along the path as you head to finish line.
As for production, it is top notch. This is usually one of the biggest races with a lot of pro athletes and Ironman does a great job putting it on. The only real downsides to this race is that it is more expensive than other 70.3s and it sells out very fast, but again, for good reason.
Awesome Season Opener
Very well organized (it’s an Ironman). This is a “must do” IM70.3. Venue, food, people..the Beach!... Just an awesome experience. The course is not super difficult, but it is challenging. … MORE
Very well organized (it’s an Ironman). This is a “must do” IM70.3. Venue, food, people..the Beach!… Just an awesome experience. The course is not super difficult, but it is challenging. You will definitely earn the finishers medal. The ride thru the military base is a one of kind experience. Highly recommended. Just have to be ready to register. Sells outs out fast, like 24 hours. I’ll going to make this race a tradition.
