City Racing At Its Best
With its iconic beachside location and big city vibe, IRONMAN 70.3 Melbourne is unlike any other race on the Oceania circuit.
From race village in the beautiful Catani Gardens in St Kilda, you’ll enjoy expansive views of Port Phillip Bay, palm tree-lined boardwalks, iconic buildings, gorgeous sunsets and all within a few kilometres of the CBD.
The course is scenic, super-quick and spectator-friendly – great for both newcomers to triathlon or for seasoned athletes to record a fast time.
Australia’s sporting mecca, Melbourne has loads of outstanding accommodation options, easy access from interstate or international hubs and great public transport network. It also has plenty of passionate locals, that will ensure the finish line crowds bring the noise.
Swim
The brand-new 1.9km ROKA Swim Course kicks off with a Rolling Start in front of the iconic St Kilda Sea Baths, right in the heart of St Kilda Beach. Water temperatures in Port Phillip Bay at this time of year sit around 18°C, so it’s likely to be a wetsuit-optional swim.
Athletes will begin by swimming 100m west from the start line, then turn left to head south toward St Kilda Marina. From there, they’ll turn right and swim west, followed by another right turn heading north, passing underneath the new St Kilda Pier. The final right turn leads into the swim finish chute directly in front of Catani Gardens, offering the shortest possible run into transition.
This course change also means spectators can now cheer athletes on from the St Kilda Pier, with panoramic views of the swim start, the water action, and the electric energy of race day.
Bike
Athletes will exit T1 to begin the first of the two laps of the 90km ZOOT Bike Course by immediately heading North for a short ride before turning South towards the mecca of cycling within Melbourne – Beach Road. The clockwise course will take cyclists South along Melbourne’s coast as they get to chance to take in views of the iconic Half Moon Bay and past the Southern point of Beaumaris before turning around just prior to the Mordialloc Life Saving Club. Athletes will follow Beach Road back to St Kilda before turning around for lap 2 just North of Catani Gardens. The fast, flat and scenic course is some of the best cycling that Melbourne has to offer!
Run
The 21.1km HOKA run course takes athletes along the St Kilda & Elwood waterfront for a scenic and flat 2 lap clockwise course, with amazing views of the Melbourne CBD. Runners will head out South onto Pier road which will link them up with the waterfront Bay Trail path while they run the length of St Kilda Beach and down to the turnaround, just past Elwood Beach. Runners will then head North back to Catani Gardens where they will start their second lap. On the second lap inbound towards Catani Gardens, runners will take a left then a right hand turn as they head down the iconic palm tree lined finish line.
